Chapter 14

Julian sat on the edge of the medical chair beside Clara, his hands trembling slightly as he carefully flipped open the heavy leather-bound ledger. The pages were yellowed with age, filled with his mother’s meticulous, sharp handwriting detailing decades of corporate acquisitions, shell companies, and systematic financial destruction.
Sarah stood quietly behind them, watching with bated breath as Julian turned past the middle entries, moving toward the final pages dated just a week prior.
"What is it, Julian?" Clara asked softly, resting her hand over his trembling fingers. "What else could she possibly have hidden in here?"
Julian didn't answer right away. His eyes were locked on a single loose sheet of paper paperclipped to the very last page. It wasn't a corporate financial statement or an offshore bank transfer. It was a certified medical adoption record bearing a state seal from thirty-five years ago.
"This... this isn't possible," Julian whispered, the color draining entirely from his face, leaving him looking more shock-stricken than he had when he first walked into the foyer and found Clara lying on the marble floor.
Agent Vance walked over, peering down at the document over Julian's shoulder. A solemn, heavy expression crossed the federal investigator’s face.
"I see you found it," Agent Vance said quietly. "The reason why your mother fought so ruthlessly to protect this estate at any cost."
Clara leaned forward, her eyes scanning the typed lines of the yellowed legal document. Her breath caught in her throat as she read the names listed under the primary guardianship clause.
"Julian..." Clara breathed, looking up at her husband with wide, horrified eyes. "According to this document... you aren't Elena’s biological son."
Julian stared at the paper in absolute disbelief. The ledger didn't just contain financial crimes; it contained the truth of his entire identity. He was the son of the corporate partner his mother had systematically ruined and forced out of the company decades ago—the very man whose death certificate Elena had forged to seize total control of the empire.
Elena had stolen him as an infant, raised him as her own weapon, and conditioned him to inherit an empire built entirely on the blood and ruin of his real family.
"That's why she hated Clara so much," Sarah murmured, the pieces finally clicking together in her mind. "Clara wasn't just an outsider to the fortune. She was investigating the original land title deeds tied to your true father’s estate."

Julian closed the ledger slowly, his hands resting heavily on his knees as the full, crushing weight of the revelation settled into his soul. All his life, he thought he was defending a legacy. In reality, he had been serving his family's greatest enemy.
Before anyone could speak another word, the sound of a sharp metal click echoed from the back seat of the police cruiser, followed by an urgent shout from the state trooper guarding the vehicle.
