Chapter 10

The world seemed to slow down into a series of excruciatingly sharp fractions of a second. Julian twisted his body away, shielding Clara with his own torso, bracing for the bone-crushing impact of the heavy brass poker.
Before the blow could land, Agent Vance moved with blinding speed. He lunged forward, catching Elena’s wrist mid-swing with a powerful grip that halted the brass poker inches from Julian's shoulder.
Elena let out an enraged animalistic hiss, twisting her arm violently in an attempt to break free, but the federal investigator’s training held firm. He swept her legs out from under her with a swift, calculated motion, sending the older woman crashing hard onto the gravel pathway.
The heavy brass poker slipped from her fingers, rolling away into the manicured flower bed.
"Federal custody," Agent Vance stated calmly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt and snapping them onto Elena’s wrists with practiced efficiency. "You have the right to remain silent, Mrs. Vance. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
Elena thrashed against the restraints, her slicked-back dark hair coming loose as she glared up at her son with absolute venom. "You let a stranger arrest your own mother, Julian! You are weak! Just like your father, you haven't got the stomach to maintain what belongs to us!"
Julian didn't answer her. He gently lowered Clara onto a clean canvas tarp that Sarah had managed to pull from the maintenance shed. Sarah knelt immediately beside her, checking Clara’s breathing with trembling hands.
"She's awake, Mr. Vance! Her pulse is stabilizing!" Sarah cried out, tears of relief finally spilling over her cheeks.
Julian stood up slowly, looking down at his mother pinned to the gravel by a federal agent. The fire behind them continued to consume the library, sending thick plumes of grey smoke into the clear blue sky. The immense weight that had crushed his family for generations finally felt like it was beginning to lift.
"You didn't protect this family, Mother," Julian said, his voice remarkably steady as he looked down at the woman who had caused so much pain. "You consumed it. And now, the bill has finally come due."
Agent Vance hoisted Elena roughly to her feet, steering her toward the black sedan waiting at the end of the driveway. "Let's move before the structural integrity of this terrace gives way entirely."
As the federal agent pushed Elena into the back seat of the cruiser, Julian turned his attention back to Clara, kneeling beside her on the tarp and taking her cold hand in his.

"We're safe now, Clara," Julian whispered, kissing her knuckles gently. "It's over."
Clara managed a weak, fragile smile, her fingers squeezing his palm back with returning strength. But as she looked past Julian toward the burning manor, her smile vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated horror as a secondary explosion rocked the western cellar doors.
