Chapter 7 - The Locked Vault

The heavy iron door slammed shut with a deafening, metallic echo that reverberated through the concrete bunker, followed immediately by the harsh, mechanical grinding of the industrial padlock sliding into place. Elena sprang to her feet, lunging toward the door and slamming her fists against the reinforced steel with all her might.
"Beatrice! Open this door right now!" Elena screamed, her voice cracking as she rattled the unyielding handle.
There was no answer from the other side, save for the muffled sound of footsteps walking away up the concrete stairs. Vance rushed to the door as well, inspecting the heavy locking mechanism with growing desperation before kicking the steel surface in futile rage.
"She dead-bolted it from the outside with a master key," Vance cursed, running a hand through his damp hair as he turned back to face the room. "There’s no cellular signal down here. The concrete is too thick."
Clara remained seated in her velvet armchair, completely unbothered by their confinement. She calmly picked up her knitting needles once more, the click-clack of the wooden tools providing a surreal soundtrack to their captivity.
"Don't waste your energy, Marcus," Clara said without looking up. "Beatrice is simply executing the next phase of the transition. The estate has been legally transferred, and by morning, your badge will be nothing more than a historical footnote."
Elena turned away from the door, her eyes burning with a fierce, dangerous anger as she walked right up to Clara’s chair. She leaned down, bringing her face inches from the old woman’s unblinking gaze.
"What did you do to Beatrice?" Elena demanded, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "She was a nervous wreck upstairs. Now she’s locking us in a vault? What did you promise her?"
Clara finally raised her eyes, meeting Elena’s furious stare with a chilling, vacant warmth. "I didn't promise her anything, my dear. I simply reminded her of what happens to people who forget their debts. Just as I am about to remind you."
Vanessa walked over, tugging gently on the hem of Elena’s olive green utility shirt. "Mommy, I'm hungry. Can we have a piece of the birthday cake now?"
Elena’s heart twisted painfully in her chest. She knelt down, scooping Vanessa up into her arms and holding the child tightly against her collarbone. "We’ll eat soon, sweetie. I promise."
Vance was pacing the perimeter of the server racks, inspecting the complex wiring and looking for an emergency override switch or a hidden maintenance hatch. His fingers flew across a secondary terminal, desperately trying to bypass the firewall on the local network.
"There's an analog telephone line wired into the server backups," Vance said, his voice laced with cautious optimism as he traced a thick black cable along the baseboard. "It bypasses the external cellular blockers. If I can splice these wires into the terminal, we can call dispatch."
Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights flickered once and died completely, plunging the bunker into absolute, pitch-black darkness. The only illumination came from the eerie, pulsing blue glow of the computer screens.
From the shadows near the far corner of the server room, a low, mechanical whirring sound began to grow louder. A hidden panel in the concrete wall slowly slid open, revealing a thick plume of white vapor hissing into the room.
Clara’s voice cut through the darkness, unnervingly calm and close.

"The ventilation system is automated, Elena. And right now, it’s pumping a very special sedative into the room. Try not to fight it. Sleep makes the transition so much easier."
