Chapter 2 - The Kitchen Phantom

Elena snatched the phone from Beatrice’s trembling hand, her eyes scanning the glowing screen with growing dread. The black-and-white footage timestamped precisely seven minutes before the candles were lit showed the grand kitchen in absolute silence. A tall figure clad in black utility gear moved with practiced stealth toward the filtered water dispenser, pouring a heavy, viscous liquid from a small glass vial directly into the pitcher that was later brought to the dining table. The shadowy intruder wore a distinctive silver ring on their left index finger—a ring that belonged to nobody in the family. Or so Elena had always believed.
"Who has access to the private pantry codes besides us?" Elena demanded, her voice dropping to a dangerous, low register as she faced the gathering of terrified relatives.
Grandma Clara did not flinch. She simply adjusted her pearl necklace, her expression as unreadable as a tombstone. "Anyone with money, Elena. And you know very well this family is drowning in debt."
Beatrice wiped her mascara-stained cheeks with the back of her hand, her eyes darting nervously toward the swinging kitchen doors. "It wasn't just a random intruder. Look at the way they moved. They knew exactly where the blind spots in the security cameras were located. That means someone inside this house disabled the north-wing sensors."
Elena’s mind raced back to Vanessa’s motionless body in the yellow dress. The sweet, cloying scent of the birthday cake suddenly made her stomach turn. She handed the phone back to Beatrice and strode past the silent relatives toward the kitchen. The air inside the pantry was noticeably colder. On the gleaming stainless-steel counter sat a single, unopened bottle of imported sparkling water—and right beside it, a handwritten note scrawled on heavy cardstock.
Elena picked up the paper with trembling fingers. The handwriting was neat, elegant, and chillingly familiar. It read: The poison was meant for the head of the house, but the child simply had the greater thirst.
A sharp click echoed behind her. The heavy pantry door swung shut, and the automated deadbolt slammed into place with a definitive, mechanical thud. Elena slammed her palms against the reinforced wood, screaming for someone to open it.
"Clara! Beatrice! Let me out!" she yelled, pressing her ear against the cold surface.
From the other side of the door, muffled by thick insulation, came the sound of slow, deliberate footsteps walking away. Then, a low voice spoke through the intercom speaker embedded in the wall, sending a fresh wave of panic through Elena's veins.

"You're looking for answers in all the wrong rooms, Elena," a synthesized voice crackled through the speaker. "The real killer is currently sitting by Vanessa's hospital bedside, holding her phone."
