Chapter 3 - The Empty Ward

The sterile smell of antiseptic hit Elena like a physical blow as she burst through the doors of the pediatric intensive care unit. Her olive green utility shirt was stained with dust from the pantry floor, her dark curly hair wildly untamed around her pale face. She rushed down the polished linoleum hallway, her running shoes squeaking loudly against the floor. Room 404. That was where little Vanessa had been transferred just an hour ago after the ambulance sirens faded into the rainy night.

Elena grabbed the brushed steel handle of the door and threw it open, expecting to see the child's chest rising and falling under a clear oxygen mask. Instead, the room was terrifyingly empty.

The white hospital bed was made with military precision, the crisp sheets pulled taut without a single wrinkle. A cardiac monitor sat in the corner, its screen completely black, unplugged from the wall outlet. The IV pole stood bare, its plastic hook swinging gently in the draft from the open window.

"No, no, no," Elena whispered, stumbling into the center of the room. She checked the bathroom, the small wardrobe, and behind the privacy curtain, finding nothing except a discarded yellow hair ribbon lying on the cold tile floor.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. With shaking hands, she pulled it out and unlocked the screen. A new notification had just arrived from an unknown sender, containing a short video file. Without hesitating, she tapped the play button.

The video opened with a tight close-up of the hospital room she was standing in right now, filmed from a high-angle perspective near the ceiling vent. A gloved hand reached down, neatly unhooking Vanessa from the life support monitors while the child was still unconscious. Then, a voice spoke off-camera—a voice that made Elena’s blood run instantly cold.

"She was never actually poisoned, Elena," Clara’s calm, measured voice echoed from the smartphone speaker. "It was a medically induced coma. We had to get her out of the house before the police arrived."

Elena stared at the screen in absolute disbelief as the video continued. The camera panned down to show Vanessa being lifted into the arms of a tall figure wearing a dark coat, carrying the child toward the open window that led out onto the hospital’s external fire escape.

Before Elena could process the sheer magnitude of the betrayal, the door to Room 404 creaked open behind her. She spun around defensively, fists clenched, ready to fight for her life. Standing in the doorway was Detective Marcus Vance, his trench coat damp from the relentless rain, holding a manila folder in one hand and a pair of silver handcuffs in the other.

"Elena Vance," the detective said, his voice completely devoid of emotion as he stepped into the room and blocked her only exit. "You need to come with me down to the station right now. We found your fingerprints all over the poison vial in the kitchen."
