Chapter 5 - Return to the Estate

The rain hammered against the reinforced windshield of the police cruiser as it sped up the long, winding gravel driveway of the ancestral estate. The grand Victorian mansion loomed out of the darkness like a monolithic beast, its gothic windows pitch black except for a single, flickering light glowing faintly from the basement coal chute. Elena sat in the back of the cruiser, her hands cuffed behind her back, staring out at the imposing structure where her entire nightmare had begun just hours ago.

Detective Vance killed the engine and stepped out into the downpour, drawing his service weapon as two backup units pulled in behind him with their red-and-blue emergency lights painting the wet stone facade in flashing crimson and azure. Vance opened the rear door, releasing the cuffs from Elena’s wrists with a stern warning to stay close and make no sudden movements.

"If this is a trap, Elena, your sentence just doubled," Vance muttered over the roar of the wind.

"It's not a trap," Elena said, her voice deadpan as she rubbed her sore wrists. "It's a homecoming. Clara always liked to finish what she started in the dark."

They moved toward the heavy oak side entrance. To their surprise, the massive door was unlocked, swinging open a few inches on its heavy brass hinges to welcome them into the freezing, unlit interior. The sweet, cloying smell of burnt sugar and vanilla still lingered faintly in the grand foyer, mingling with the sharp, metallic tang of ozone and old dust.

Vance swept his flashlight beam across the entrance hall, illuminating the long dining table where the birthday cake still sat untouched, its candles long since melted into grotesque, waxen puddles. The yellow dress Vanessa had worn was draped neatly over the back of the head seat, empty and lifeless.

"Down the service stairs," Elena whispered, pointing toward a narrow, hidden door tucked away beneath the grand staircase. "That leads directly to the wine cellar and the old bomb shelter beneath the foundation."

They descended into the subterranean gloom in single file, the beam of Vance’s tactical flashlight cutting through the damp, subterranean fog. The air grew noticeably warmer the deeper they went, carrying a faint, rhythmic humming sound that vibrated through the stone walls.

At the end of the narrow corridor stood a heavy iron vault door, cracked open about an inch. A sliver of warm, golden light spilled out onto the stone floor, accompanied by the unmistakable sound of a child softly humming a nursery rhyme.

Elena pushed past Vance before he could stop her, kicking the heavy iron door wide open with a resounding crash.

Sitting in the center of the reinforced concrete bunker, surrounded by banks of glowing computer monitors and secure servers, was Grandma Clara. She was knitting calmly in a velvet armchair, while little Vanessa sat on a plush rug nearby, completely unharmed, playing peacefully with a wooden puzzle.

Clara looked up slowly, her grey hair immaculate, her pearl necklace catching the amber glow of the server racks. She offered Elena a warm, terrifyingly maternal smile.

"Welcome home, my dear," Clara said softly, setting her knitting needles down on the armrest. "We've been waiting for you to finish the puzzle."
