Chapter 13 - The Amber Interception

The radio static hissed violently inside the underground bunker, the chaotic sounds of gunfire fading into a chilling, dead silence. Captain Thomas snatched the tactical radio from his officer’s shoulder, shouting into the receiver with mounting urgency.

"Dispatch, report! Status of the transport van? Give me a sitrep, damn it!" Thomas yelled.

Only unbroken white noise answered him. The encrypted channel had been completely jammed by a high-frequency signal originating from somewhere directly above the estate grounds.

Elena clutched the vintage cassette tape tightly in her hand, her mind racing with terrifying speed. "They didn't just intercept the van, Captain. They planned for the arrest from the very beginning."

"Who?" Thomas demanded, drawing his service weapon as he turned toward the bunker stairs. "Who planned this?"

"The people who actually own the trust," a cool, synthesized voice echoed through the bunker’s emergency intercom speakers.

Elena spun around. The main control monitor—the one that had been dead since the power shutdown—flickered violently back to life. A single, high-definition video feed filled the screen, broadcasting live from the estate's front gates.

The police transport van was parked at an unnatural angle across the winding gravel driveway, its front tires shot out, steam hissing heavily from its radiator. Surrounding the wreckage were three unmarked matte-black SUVs. Men in identical tactical gear—bearing no police insignia or military patches—were methodically loading handcuffed figures into the back of their vehicles.

Clara wasn't among them. Neither was Beatrice, nor Detective Vance.

Instead, standing casually in front of the lead SUV was a tall, imposing figure wearing a classic trench coat and a wide-brimmed hat that cast his face into deep shadow. He held a portable satellite jammer in one hand and a cigar in the other, puffing slowly as he stared directly into the perimeter camera lens.

"Who is that?" Captain Thomas muttered, his eyes narrowing as he stepped closer to the glowing screen.

Elena felt the breath leave her lungs in a sharp, painful gasp. She knew that posture. She knew that shadow. It was a man the family had buried ten years ago in a private ceremony behind the greenhouse—a man whose death certificate had been signed by Clara herself.

"It's Arthur," Elena whispered, the name tasting like cold ash in her mouth. "My grandfather."

On the monitor, Arthur raised his left hand toward the camera. On his index index finger gleamed a distinctive silver ring—the exact same ring worn by the phantom intruder who poisoned the water pitcher during Vanessa's birthday dinner.

The screen flickered once, cutting to a split-screen view showing the interior of the main house upstairs. The camera panned slowly across the grand dining room, stopping directly on little Vanessa, who was sitting quietly at the table once more, calmly eating a slice of the birthday cake while surrounded by the masked tactical operatives.

"They're still inside the house," Elena said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, resolute whisper. She turned away from the bunker wall, dropping the metal lockbox into Captain Thomas’s hands.

"What are you doing, Ms. Vance?" Thomas asked, watching her grab a heavy steel crowbar from the maintenance shelf.

"Ending it," Elena replied, her dark curly hair framing a face hardened by absolute fury. "Come on, Captain. Let's go meet my grandfather."
