Chapter 1 - The Panic at the Table

The air inside the grand dining room grew instantly thick with terror as Elena lunged forward, her olive green utility shirt rustling sharply against the polished mahogany chairs. She shoved past her terrified relatives with desperate force, her dark curly hair whipping across her flushed face as she zeroed in on the child.
"Don't touch Vanessa, let her calm down!" Elena screamed, her voice cracking with raw panic as she reached out a shaking hand toward the table.
Grandma Clara stepped into her path with terrifying grace, placing a heavy, jeweled hand on Elena’s shoulder. The old woman’s grey hair was neatly pinned, her pearl necklace gleaming under the crystal chandelier, but her eyes were chillingly vacant.
"Let her calm down," Clara whispered softly, her voice devoid of any maternal warmth.
Vanessa sat slumped in her yellow dress, her little curls framing a pale, waxy face. The large tiered birthday cake stood mocking them, its candles flickering in a dead draft.
Aunt Beatrice buried her face in her red dress, her shoulders heaving with hysterical sobs as she muffled her cries behind trembling fingers.
"She took my cake!" Beatrice wailed, rocking back and forth in a grotesque display of displaced grief.
Elena yanked herself free from Clara’s grip, her fingers darting to Vanessa’s cold neck to check for a pulse. The skin was freezing. Vanessa’s eyes were locked open, staring blankly at the burning wax.
"What did you put in the frosting, Beatrice?" Elena hissed, spinning around to face the table.
"Nothing! It was just a regular delivery!" Beatrice sobbed, dropping her hands to reveal a manicured face twisted in genuine horror.
Clara stepped closer, her expression hardening into stone as she whispered something else into the heavy silence.
"She didn't eat the cake, Elena. She drank the water."
Elena froze, her gaze darting to the half-empty crystal glass beside Vanessa’s plate. The ice cubes had melted entirely, leaving a cloudy, iridescent film clinging to the rim.
Suddenly, Beatrice stopped crying. Her phone buzzed loudly against the wooden table, flashing an urgent notification. She picked it up, her face draining of all color as she stared at the screen.

"Look at this," Beatrice whispered, turning the phone toward Elena with a trembling finger. "It's a live security feed from the kitchen, and someone was standing right behind Clara."
