Chapter 7: The Shadow in the Parking Garage

The subterranean parking garage beneath Marcus’s office building was cold, damp, and dimly lit by flickering fluorescent tubes. Eleanor walked briskly toward her rented sedan, her heels clicking rhythmically against the concrete floor. She kept her keys clutched tightly in her hand, her senses sharply attuned to every echo in the concrete cavern.

A dark sedan idling near the exit ramp caught her eye. Its headlights were off, but the silhouette of a driver hunched over the steering wheel was unmistakably tense. Eleanor slowed her pace, her hand drifting to the small canister of pepper spray in her designer handbag.

Before she could reach her car door, a heavy hand grabbed her by the shoulder, spinning her around with brutal force.

Julian stood before her, his dark blue suit rumpled and stained with sweat, his hair disheveled. The cool, handsome billionaire facade was entirely gone, replaced by the desperate, wild-eyed expression of a trapped animal.

“You think you can just walk away from me?” Julian snarled, his grip tightening painfully on her arm. “You think you’re going to take everything I built and leave me with nothing?”

Eleanor didn’t scream. She didn’t cry. She stared straight into his bloodshot eyes with icy resolve. “Let go of me, Julian. Every second you spend touching me is another charge added to your restraining order.”

“I don’t care about restraining orders!” Julian hissed, shaking her slightly. “You ruined my life! You gave them the ledgers! If I’m going down, I’m making sure you never see daylight again!”

He lunged forward, trying to force her toward the open door of his idling car, but before Eleanor could deploy her pepper spray, the heavy roar of an engine echoed through the garage. Marcus’s security detail—two ex-military operatives—emerged from behind a concrete pillar, moving with terrifying speed.

Within seconds, Julian was slammed hard against the side of his own vehicle, his arms pinned behind his back in a professional submission hold.

“Get your hands off me!” Julian screamed, thrashing against the operatives.

Marcus stepped out from the shadows of the ramp, his expression cold as ice. He walked up to his frantic brother, looking down at him with absolute pity.

“You never learn, do you, Julian?” Marcus said softly. “You always think you’re the smartest person in the room.”

Julian spat onto the concrete, glaring daggers at Eleanor as she calmly straightened her jacket. “She’s a thief! She stole my company!”
