Chapter 1: The Descent from Power

Julian Vance stood in the center of the penthouse living room, his chest heaving beneath the tailored fabric of his dark blue suit. His jaw was clenched so tightly a muscle twitched near his temple. He glared furiously at Eleanor, the red-haired woman standing by the foyer. The ambient city lights filtered through the floor-to-ceiling glass, casting long, cold shadows across the imported marble floor. He had built Vance Global Industries from nothing, and he expected absolute obedience from everyone in his orbit, especially the woman who wore his ring.

“You’re not my wife,” Julian growled, his voice vibrating with suppressed rage as he stepped closer to her. “You’re the maid now. Earn your keep.”

Eleanor did not flinch. She adjusted the strap of her light blue silk slip dress, the thigh-high slit catching the dim light. The diamond necklace and matching earrings around her throat and ears caught the glow, symbols of a wealth he thought he controlled. She calmly looked at him, maintaining her absolute composure.

“All right,” Eleanor said, her voice steady, quiet, and chillingly devoid of the warmth he usually demanded. “I understand perfectly.”

Julian stared at her, momentarily thrown off by her lack of tears. He expected begging, apologies, or a display of helplessness. Instead, she reached down, gripped the handle of her sleek rolling suitcase, and pivoted sharply on her heel. She began walking toward the double doors of the elevator.

“Where do you think you’re going with that luggage?” Julian shouted, disbelief cracking his authoritative facade.

Eleanor paused just before the threshold. She turned her head to look back at him. Standing a few feet away, Martha, the household manager in her crisp black blazer, watched in absolute shock, both hands pressed tightly over her mouth to stifle a gasp.

“I don’t live here anymore,” Eleanor said, her eyes locking onto Julian’s widening pupils. “And neither does your wife.”

Julian took a step forward, ready to block her path, but the elevator chime rang, and the doors slid open to reveal two federal agents holding a federal subpoena.
