Chapter 14: The Final Reckoning

The penthouse was silent when Eleanor unlocked the heavy wooden doors and stepped inside. The shattered French doors had been temporarily sealed with heavy plywood and plastic sheeting, but the rain-slicked Manhattan skyline still gleamed in the afternoon light.
Julian sat alone on the edge of the master bed in the guest suite. His dark blue suit was ruined, his shirt collar unbuttoned, his hands cuffed to a heavy brass bedpost by federal order while he awaited transfer to the federal holding facility.
He looked up as Eleanor’s heels clicked against the hardwood floor. His bloodshot eyes were filled with a toxic mix of hatred, exhaustion, and desperate defeat.
“You think you’re untouchable now, don't you?” Julian rasped, his voice cracking. “You think taking down Sterling makes you a hero?”
Eleanor stopped a few feet away from him, looking down with calm, unblinking eyes. “I never wanted to be a hero, Julian. I just wanted my life back.”
“You trapped me,” Julian whispered, leaning forward as far as the handcuffs would allow. “You seduced me into this marriage just to destroy everything I built.”
“You built nothing, Julian,” Eleanor corrected quietly. “You stole the foundation from your brother, you embezzled from the pension funds, and you treated everyone around you like disposable objects. I simply stopped protecting you from your own incompetence.”
Julian let out a bitter, broken laugh that echoed off the high ceilings. “You’ll never be free of me, Eleanor. My lawyers filed an appeal before they resigned. My name is still tied to every trust, every asset, every legal document bearing your maiden name.”
Eleanor reached into her handbag and pulled out a single, neatly folded document. She tossed it onto the mattress right in front of him.
Julian looked down at the paper. His eyes widened in absolute horror as he read the heading: Decree of Absolute Annulment and Asset Forfeiture Waiver, Signed by Federal Judge Katherine Vance.
“The marriage was legally dissolved this morning under federal RICO statutes,” Eleanor said, her voice like steel. “Your name has been permanently severed from every trust, every account, and every property I ever owned or controlled.”
Julian stared at the signature, his breathing turning shallow and ragged. The illusion of his power was gone, stripped away entirely by the stroke of a pen.
“And one more thing,” Eleanor added, turning toward the door. “You’re no longer my husband. And I’m certainly not your maid anymore.”
