Chapter 13: The Confrontation at the Curb

Richard Sterling looked immaculate in a charcoal three-piece suit, his silver hair neatly combed, his expression radiating absolute corporate arrogance. He leaned slightly toward the open window, resting one hand on an expensive gold-capped cane.

“Eleanor,” Sterling said smoothly, his voice carrying the calm authority of a man who believed he owned the city. “You’ve been making quite a bit of noise lately. My associates tell me you’re carrying something very valuable in that handbag of yours.”

Eleanor did not flinch. She stopped with her hand hovering over the town car door handle, turning to face him directly. Her diamond earrings sparkled in the morning sunlight.

“You’re a little late, Richard,” Eleanor replied, her tone effortless and ice-cold. “The federal agents are already en route to your Zurich server.”

Sterling’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of panic flashing across his aging features before he quickly masked it with a polite chuckle. “You overestimate your influence, my dear. The legal system moves slowly, and men like me write the laws you’re trying to use as weapons.”

“Men like you used to write the rules,” Eleanor corrected, taking a slow step toward his limousine. “Now you’re just a defendant waiting for a jail cell.”

Sterling’s eyes narrowed dangerously. He signaled his driver to lock the doors, but before the vehicle could pull away, two federal tactical SUVs flanked the limousine, blocking its escape route entirely. Agent Miller stepped out of the lead vehicle, drawing his badge and pointing it directly at Sterling’s window.

“Richard Sterling, you’re under arrest for corporate espionage, treason, and securities fraud,” Miller announced loudly, gesturing for backup. “Step out of the vehicle with your hands where we can see them.”

Sterling stared through the glass at the federal agents, realizing the trap had snapped shut. He slowly turned his gaze back to Eleanor, who stood watching him with quiet, unyielding resolve.

“You think you’ve won,” Sterling hissed through the slightly cracked window. “Julian will never let you walk away. He knows things about your past you haven't even told the feds.”

Eleanor tilted her head slightly, her expression remaining entirely unreadable. “Julian doesn't know anything about me that I haven't already put in the public record.”

As the federal agents opened the limousine door and placed the silver handcuffs around Sterling’s wrists, Eleanor turned away, sliding into her own town car. The nightmare was finally ending, but one loose thread remained waiting for her back at the penthouse.
