Chapter 11: The Vanishing Asset

The intruder kicked over a heavy floor lamp to block pursuit and dove back through the shattered French doors into the raging storm outside. Marcus’s operatives rushed to the balcony, firing warning shots into the rainy night, but the figure had already vanished down the exterior maintenance ladder into the alleyway below.
Marcus hurried back inside, his face dark with fury. He knelt beside Eleanor, checking her arms for injuries. “Are you hurt? Did they get it?”
Eleanor stared at the empty velvet slot inside the piano. Her chest rose and fell in slow, controlled breaths. “They got the backup card.”
“Damn it!” Marcus slammed his fist against the piano wood. “That card contained the international security clearances. If whoever has it decrypts those files, they can blackmail half the defense department.”
Eleanor stood up slowly, brushing a speck of dust from her light blue silk dress. Despite the chaos, her expression remained chillingly composed. She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, watching the rain streak down the glass.
“They didn't get everything,” Eleanor said quietly.
Marcus looked up, confusion in his eyes. “What do you mean? You just said the micro-SD card was stolen.”
Eleanor reached up and touched the diamond pendant hanging from her necklace. With a subtle twist of the clasp, the diamond setting popped open, revealing a microscopic data storage chip hidden safely inside the precious stone.
“Julian bought me this necklace on our third anniversary,” Eleanor explained, her voice smooth as glass. “He bragged about how it was worth a small fortune. He never realized the jeweler built a custom data vault into the setting at my secret request. I swapped the cards five minutes before we left the penthouse.”
Martha slowly lifted her head from the floor, her eyes wide with disbelief as she looked at Eleanor. “You... you anticipated someone breaking in?”
“I anticipated that Julian was just a distraction,” Eleanor replied, her eyes fixed on the stormy Manhattan skyline. “The real puppet master was always terrified of what I knew. And now, they’ve exposed themselves by coming after it.”
Marcus let out a low whistle of profound respect. “You’re the most dangerous woman I’ve ever met, Eleanor.”
“I’m a survivor,” Eleanor corrected, stepping away from the window. “And now it’s time to end this once and for all.”
