Chapter 9: The Father's Promise**

That evening, the grand mansion was peaceful once again. The press vans had dispersed, leaving only the quiet whisper of evening wind rustling through the maple trees along the driveway.
Julian walked upstairs to Lily’s bedroom. The room was softly lit by a warm nightlight shaped like a sleeping crescent moon. Lily was tucked under her duvet, her little face framed by the pillows, while Elena softly read a story from an illustrated book.
Elena closed the book and stood up politely as Julian entered. "She's been waiting for you, Mr. Vance."
Julian nodded with a gentle smile. "Thank you, Elena. You can take the rest of the night off."
Julian sat down on the edge of the small bed. Lily peeked out from beneath her blankets, her hazel eyes bright in the dim glow.
"Did you stop the bad men with cameras?" she asked softly.
"I talked to them," Julian said, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "Just like you talked to me."
Lily smiled, pulling Barnaby out from under the covers and showing him to Julian. The black thread stitches on the bear's side were uneven and crooked, but they held firm. "Barnaby doesn't hurt anymore."
"I’m glad," Julian whispered, feeling a profound sense of peace wash over his chest. "Lily... I need to apologize to you."
Lily tilted her head. "Why?"
"Because for a long time, I thought being strong meant keeping my heart locked away so nothing could hurt us," Julian said, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "I thought if I was tough and cold, I could keep you safe forever. But when you stood up to me in the hall... you showed me that real strength is protecting other people, even when it's scary."
Lily reached out her small hand and patted Julian’s cheek with innocent tenderness. "You're not mean anymore, Daddy."
Julian closed his eyes for a second, savoring the word. *Daddy.* Not Mr. Vance. Not the Chairman. Just Daddy.

"I promise you, Lily," he said softly, kissing her forehead. "I will never forget that again."
