Chapter 3: The Broken Toy**

By midday, the sprawling estate grounds were drenched in mild autumn sunlight. Julian walked through the garden toward the old stone gazebo where Lily sat at a small wooden table, surrounded by plastic tea cups and a torn, vintage stuffed bear named Barnaby.

Elena stood nearby, watching with cautious relief as Julian approached. He motioned for Elena to take a break.

Julian stepped into the gazebo and sat on the low wooden bench. "May I join the tea party?"

Lily glanced up, her expression still guarded. Her little fingers were busily trying to push white stuffing back into Barnaby’s torn side seam. "Only if you say sorry to Marcus."

Julian smiled faintly, feeling an unexpected pang of humility. "I spoke with Marcus. We’re working things out." He pointed to the bear. "What happened to Barnaby?"

"His stitch broke," Lily whispered, her bottom lip quivering slightly. "I pulled too hard. Now his fluff comes out and he can’t hold his head up."

Julian reached out his hand, palm up, asking for permission. Lily hesitated before placing the worn brown bear into his manicured hands. The toy had belonged to Clara when she was a little girl. It was irreplaceable.

"You know," Julian said, turning the bear over gently, "when something tears, pushing the fluff back inside doesn't fix the hole. You have to thread a needle, take your time, and mend it from the outside in."

"Can you do it?" Lily asked, her big hazel eyes wide with sincere hope.

"I haven't sewn since I was a boy," Julian admitted. "My mother used to patch my school trousers when we couldn't afford new ones. But... I can try. If you help me hold the seam."

For the next half hour, the billionaire titan sat hunched over a five-dollar sewing kit brought by Elena, his large fingers clumsily guiding a needle through old cotton while his daughter carefully pinched the fabric closed. With every awkward stitch, the cold, impenetrable walls Julian had spent years constructing around himself began to crumble, thread by thread.
