Chapter 9: Elena’s New Role**
Two weeks later, Elena was fully recovered, her cheeks glowing with health for the first time in years. But when she reported to the pantry to resume her cleaning duties, Mrs. Gable stopped her with a smile.
“You’re not cleaning today, Elena,” the housekeeper announced, handing her an envelope. “Mr. Glenn wants to see you in the West Wing office.”
Puzzled, Elena walked to the sunlit office. Arthur was reviewing building blueprints when she entered.
“Mr. Glenn? Mrs. Gable said I’m reassigned?”
“Sit, Elena,” Arthur said, gesturing to the chair across from him. He slid a folder toward her. “I did some research into your employment background before your husband fell ill. You hold a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Penn State, and you managed logistics for a regional supply chain for four years.”
Elena looked down, surprised. “Yes, sir. But after the medical bills mounted and Nora was born, I needed immediate cash jobs with flexible hours. Cleaning was the only thing available that paid weekly.”
“You’re wasted holding a mop, Elena,” Arthur said directly. “The Glenn Foundation is launching a new initiative providing emergency micro-grants and healthcare subsidies for working-class single mothers across the tri-state area. I need an Executive Operations Director who actually understands the reality of poverty. The position is yours, if you want it.”
Elena stared at the contract, her breath catching. The starting salary was more than she had ever dreamed of earning.
“I don’t know what to say…” she whispered, tears glistening in her eyes.
