Chapter 11: The Shadow of the Past**

Just as they stepped out onto the gravel driveway, a black sedan pulled up to the security gate. A man in a rumpled brown suit stepped out, clutching a manila folder under his arm.

Arthur’s security team immediately intercepted him, but the man raised his hands defensively. “I’m not here to cause trouble! I’m looking for Elena Davies. My name is Thomas Vance, attorney for the estate of Peter Davies.”

Elena froze, her hand tightening around Nora’s. Peter was her late husband.

Arthur placed a calming hand on Elena’s shoulder and signaled his head of security to let the man approach. “What is this about?” Arthur demanded, stepping slightly in front of Elena and Nora.

The lawyer wiped his brow with a handkerchief. “Mr. Glenn, I apologize for the intrusion. For the past eighteen months, my firm has been litigating an asbestos exposure class-action lawsuit against the construction firm Peter worked for before his passing. The settlement was finalized last Friday.”

Elena’s lips parted in shock. “Peter always said the company cut corners, but they denied it for years…”

“The court ruled in favor of the victims’ families,” Vance continued, opening the folder and handing Elena a certified legal document. “The settlement pays out full restitution, covering all past damages and pain-and-suffering compensation. Mrs. Davies… your family has been awarded 1.8 million dollars.”
