Chapter 5: The Ledger of Sins**

Later that evening, Arthur summoned his chief financial advisor, Marcus Vance, to the estate. Marcus arrived carrying thick manila folders, expecting a discussion on the upcoming high-rise development in Manhattan.
Instead, Arthur handed him a single sheet of paper containing Elena Davies’s legal and financial information.
“I want you to track down every single debt, loan, and collection agency attached to this name,” Arthur commanded.
Marcus blinked, confused. “Sir? This looks like a maid’s personal file. Is there an issue of theft?”
“The only theft happening in this house is that woman’s life being stolen by predatory lenders,” Arthur said sharply. “Buy the debt. Every single cent of it. Student loans, credit cards, hospital liens—all of it. Transfer the ownership of those debts to my holding company.”
“And then?” Marcus asked, pen poised over his pad.
“And then write them off. Mark them paid in full. Send certified zero-balance notices to her legal address by tomorrow afternoon.”
Marcus adjusted his glasses, astonished. “Arthur, that could run close to eighty thousand dollars. She’s just domestic staff.”

Arthur stood up, walking over to the fireplace where the flames crackled warmly. “Eighty thousand dollars is what we spend on catering for an annual charity gala to pretend we care about humanity, Marcus. Today, we’re actually going to care.”
