Chapter 8: Whispers in High Society**

Word of the billionaire’s sudden change of heart did not stay contained within the mansion walls. Within a week, the Glenn estate had undergone a quiet revolution.
Arthur had instructed Mrs. Gable to double the wages of all domestic staff, institute comprehensive health coverage, and create a college fund program for the children of every employee working on his properties.
At the annual Manhattan Investors Gala, whispers rippled through the ballroom. High-society peers cornered Arthur near the champagne bar.
“Arthur, is it true?” sneered Julian Sterling, a rival hedge-fund manager. “I hear you’ve turned your mansion into a community welfare center. Giving luxury suites to housekeepers? Buying out debts for the help? You’re turning soft. Wall Street doesn’t reward sentimentality.”
Arthur took a measured sip of sparkling water, his gaze cool and unyielding. “Wall Street measures wealth in quarterly profits, Julian. But a man who can only feel powerful by exploiting the desperation of those beneath him isn't wealthy. He’s bankrupt.”
Julian’s smirk vanished. “They’re just staff, Arthur. You pay them to perform a service, nothing more.”
“They are the foundation that keeps our lives functional,” Arthur responded evenly. “If you treat the foundation like dirt, don't be surprised when your entire house collapses.”

Without another word, Arthur set his glass down and walked out of the ballroom, entirely unbothered by the quiet murmurs of the elite.
