Chapter 8: The Hidden Locket**

By 3:00 AM, the mansion was surrounded by flashing red and blue lights. Detectives from the state homicide division moved through the grand dining room and upper suites, cataloging evidence under the harsh glow of portable floodlights.

Dr. Vance, Victoria’s cousin, had already been apprehended at the airport trying to board a private flight to the Cayman Islands. Under interrogation, he broke within twenty minutes, confessing to supplying controlled toxins and falsifying Eleanor Sterling’s original autopsy report.

Upstairs, a pediatric medical team had arrived to perform a comprehensive toxicological screening on young Lily. The preliminary blood test confirmed trace levels of arsenic, perfectly counteracted by the charcoal and emetic compounds Clara had administered.

"Another month without that antidote," the lead pediatrician told Arthur in the hallway, his voice grave, "and the child would have suffered irreversible neurological damage and organ failure. Whoever gave her those bitter doses saved her life."

Arthur walked back into Lily’s bedroom. The little girl was awake, sitting cross-legged on her bed, watching the flashing emergency lights paint patterns across her ceiling.

Clara was sitting on a low stool by the bed, softly humming an old French lullaby—a tune Arthur had forgotten existed.

"Clara," Arthur said softly, kneeling beside the bed. "Where did you learn that song? Eleanor used to sing that to Lily when she was an infant."

Clara stopped humming. She reached into the pocket of her grey servant uniform and pulled out a small, tarnished silver locket suspended on a frayed ribbon. She opened the latch, revealing two miniature portraits: one of Eleanor as a newborn baby, and another of a young Clara holding her.

Arthur’s breath stopped in his throat. "Eleanor... was your daughter?"
