Chapter 11: The First Morning of Light**

Three weeks after the trial, the first signs of spring arrived at the Sterling estate. The bitter winter chill that had hung over the limestone manor for years finally melted into warm golden sunlight and blooming daffodils.

Arthur walked down the grand marble staircase at 7:00 AM. For the first time in his life, he was not wearing a three-piece suit or checking international stock markets on his phone. He wore a simple flannel shirt and jeans, carrying an old storybook under his arm.

From the kitchen, the sweet, buttery aroma of French crêpes and fresh strawberries drifted through the hallway.

Arthur stepped into the warm kitchen. Clara was standing by the stove, dressed not in a maid’s uniform, but in a soft lavender cashmere cardigan and linen slacks that Arthur had bought for her. Beside her on a wooden stepstool, Lily was happily stirring a bowl of batter with a wooden spoon, her face smudged with flour and her laughter ringing through the high-ceilinged room.

"Look, Daddy!" Lily beamed, pointing her spoon at the frying pan. "Grandma is teaching me the secret recipe from Lyon!"

Arthur smiled, a deep, healing warmth blooming inside his chest. "Does the recipe require that much flour on your nose, young lady?"

Lily giggled, wiping her nose with the back of her sleeve, leaving an even larger white streak.

Arthur walked over, kissed the top of Lily’s head, and then turned to Clara. He gently placed a hand on the older woman’s shoulder. "Good morning, Mom."

Clara looked up, her hazel eyes—the exact same shade as Eleanor’s and Lily’s—shining with peace. "Good morning, son. Breakfast is almost ready."
