Chapter 9 - The Master Keys to the Vault

The amber emergency lights cast long, distorted shadows across the minimalist living room, turning the multimillion-dollar penthouse into a staging ground for a silent corporate coup. Jonathan Vance stood with his hands neatly folded behind his back, looking down at Thomas, who was slowly pushing himself up from the concrete floor, clutching his bruised shoulder.
"You're trespassing, Jonathan," Thomas rasped, his voice tight with pain, though his eyes burned with an icy, unyielding fury. "The federal marshals are already aware of your firm's ties to the Sterling embezzlement ring. You don't have twenty-four hours before your offices are raided."
Jonathan chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound. "Raided by whom, Mr. Vance? The police? The SEC? Everyone you think is on your side received a very generous digital deposit to their offshore retirement funds roughly ten minutes ago. As far as the authorities are concerned, the investigation into the Grand Sterling Hotel is officially closed due to 'insufficient actionable evidence' and 'procedural technicalities.'"
Maya’s stomach churned. Held firmly in the grip of the tactical operative, she strained against the heavy arm across her chest, glaring at the lawyer. "You bought them off. You bought the whole damn system."
Jonathan turned his gaze toward her, his expression softening into a patronizing mask of artificial sympathy. "My dear, the world isn't run by morals or family legacies. It's run by liquidity. And right now, your father's liquidity is tied up in a dozen frozen trust accounts that require a biometric master key to unlock." He gestured toward the open briefcase David had brought earlier. "Which, conveniently, is sitting right here in your uncle's little stash box."
David, who had been pinned against the far wall by the second tactical operative, spat a drop of blood onto the floor and glared at the lawyer. "You're too late, Jonathan. The federal grand jury already has copies of the primary ledgers. Even if you wipe this room, the truth is out."
"Copies can be amended, Mr. Vance," Jonathan replied coolly, walking over to the briefcase and flipping through the weathered documents. "And witnesses... well, accidents happen in high-altitude penthouses all the time. A tragic electrical fire caused by faulty wiring. Very standard, very clean."
Thomas’s face hardened. He took a half-step forward, ignoring the throbbing pain in his shoulder. "If you touch my daughter or my grandson, Jonathan, I will spend every last dime of my remaining fortune hunting down every single person who shares your last name until there's nothing left of your bloodline."
Jonathan stopped flipping through the papers. He looked up, his smile vanishing, replaced by a cold, predatory gleam. "That's the spirit, Thomas. But first, let's talk about the transfer codes." He pulled a sleek, encrypted tablet from his coat pocket and held it out. "Sign over your remaining voting shares in Vance Industrial to our shell holding company, and your daughter and grandson walk out of here tonight unharmed. Refuse, and we start burning the documents—starting with the ones proving your company's involvement in the illegal offshore dumping scandals of 2018."
Maya stopped struggling against her captor. Her breath hitched. The 2018 dumping scandal—an environmental disaster that had nearly destroyed her father's company years ago, one her father had always sworn he had no part in. She looked over at Thomas, her eyes searching his face for a denial, a sign that it was all another corporate lie.
Thomas didn't meet her eyes. He lowered his head, his shoulders slumping under an invisible weight.

And in that quiet, devastating moment of silence, the nursery door down the hall creaked open, followed by the tiny, frightened cry of Maya's baby waking up in the dark.
