Chapter 8 - The Power Outage in the Sky

The sudden plunge into absolute darkness was accompanied by the heavy, ominous thud of the penthouse’s reinforced steel security shutters slamming down over every floor-to-ceiling glass window, cutting off the glittering view of the city skyline.

Maya instinctively stumbled backward, her hands sweeping the dark air until they collided with the cold concrete wall. "Dad? David?" she called out, her voice echoing in the enclosed space. "What's happening? Is it a blackout?"

"No," David’s voice rasped from somewhere near the center of the room, sharp and urgent. "That's not a normal power failure. The entire building's grid was just remotely tripped. Someone bypassed the manual backups."

"Stay where you are, Maya," Thomas commanded, his voice deep and commanding, cutting through the shadows. The sound of heavy fabric shifting indicated he was moving toward the emergency wall panel where the manual generator switch was located. "David, stop moving. Whoever triggered this lockdown knew exactly where we'd be."

In the pitch black, a faint, rhythmic sound began to echo from the private elevator shaft—the distinct, mechanical whine of cables straining under a heavy load, followed by the heavy clank of the security overrides being manually forced open from the floor below. Someone was coming up, and they weren't using the keycard system.

Maya’s heart hammered against her ribs. Her first instinct was the baby—her son was sleeping in the nursery down the eastern corridor. She took a silent step along the wall, feeling her way through the darkness toward the hallway, trying to ignore the terror tightening her throat.

"Dad, the baby," she whispered into the dark, her voice trembling.

"Don't move, Maya!" Thomas shouted, his voice suddenly laced with raw panic—a tone she had never heard from him in her entire life. "Get away from the hallway!"

A blinding flash of light suddenly tore through the darkness as an infrared breach-charge blew the nursery door off its hinges down the hall. A concussive shockwave rippled through the penthouse, followed by the sound of heavy, combat-booted footsteps marching purposefully across the floorboards.

Maya screamed, dropping to her knees as debris rained down from the ceiling. Through the swirling dust and smoke, the faint red glow of tactical laser sights painted the walls of the living room. Two heavily armed figures in matte-black tactical gear stepped out of the hallway, their weapons raised, scanning the room with chilling efficiency.

"Target secured in the secondary sector," one of them barked into a tactical comms unit clipped to his shoulder. "Proceeding to primary acquisition."

Thomas moved with surprising speed for a man his age, lunging toward the intruders in a desperate bid to protect his family, but a swift rifle-butt to the shoulder sent him crashing hard onto the concrete floor.

"Dad!" Maya cried out, scrambling forward to reach him, but a heavy hand grabbed her by the shoulder, hauling her to her feet with brutal force.

A third figure stepped out from the private elevator shaft, walking with a familiar, slow, deliberate stride that cut through the chaos of the room. The figure stepped into the dim amber emergency lighting that flickered on overhead, revealing a tailored dark suit and a cold, calculating smile.

It wasn't a corporate assassin. It was Arthur Vance’s high-priced defense attorney, Jonathan Vance—no relation to the others, but the man who had secretly represented the shadow syndicate bankrolling Donald Sterling’s embezzlement ring.

Jonathan adjusted his tie, looking down at Thomas groaning on the floor, and then at Maya struggling in the grip of the tactical operative.

"Did you really think locking up Donald Sterling would stop the board takeover, Mr. Vance?" Jonathan asked smoothly, pulling a crisp, untraced corporate document from his leather portfolio. "You bought the debt, yes. But you forgot to check who holds the master keys to the digital vault."
