Chapter 10 - The Ultimatum in the Nursery

The faint, distressed wail of the infant echoing down the hallway shattered the tense silence of the penthouse. Maya’s maternal instinct instantly overrode every shred of fear and shock paralyzing her limbs. She violently twisted her body, using her heel to stomp down hard on the tactical operative’s boot.
The man grunted in surprise, his grip loosening for a fraction of a second—just long enough for Maya to wrench herself free. She didn't hesitate; she sprinted down the hallway toward the nursery, her bare feet slapping against the concrete floor.
"Stop her!" Jonathan barked, pointing toward the hallway.
One of the armed operatives raised his rifle, tracking Maya’s movement, but David lunged from the wall, slamming his shoulder directly into the operative’s chest and sending both men crashing hard against a minimalist glass display case that shattered into a million sparkling shards.
"Maya, get the baby!" David roared over the sound of breaking glass as he grappled with the operative on the floor.
Maya didn't look back. She threw open the nursery door, rushing past the blown-out frame into the dimly lit room where her son’s crib stood. The baby was crying hysterically now, terrified by the lingering smell of smoke and the shouting outside. She scooped him up into her arms, pressing his warm, trembling body against her chest, whispering frantic, soothing words into his soft hair.
As she turned to leave the room, a heavy shadow fell across the nursery doorway.
Jonathan Vance stood leaning against the shattered frame, a calm, chilling smile playing on his lips. He wasn't holding a weapon; he didn't need one. He simply held up his encrypted tablet, its screen glowing with a live camera feed of the building's exterior security perimeter.
"You can run down the service stairs, my dear," Jonathan said smoothly, his voice dripping with condescension. "Though I should let you know—the ground floor is currently surrounded by municipal police officers who responded to a silent panic button triggered from this very floor. Only, they're not here to rescue you."
Maya clutched her baby tighter, backing away toward the corner of the nursery. "What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about jurisdictional control," Jonathan replied, taking a slow step into the room. "The captain leading that squad is on my payroll. When they breach this penthouse in thirty seconds, they won't find a corporate extortion plot. They'll find a deranged, estranged uncle holding a billionaire's family hostage, and a desperate grandfather trying to defend them." He paused, letting the dark brilliance of his plan sink in. "And in the ensuing crossfire... well, tragic accidents happen in high-altitude penthouses all the time."

Before Maya could scream or bolt past him, heavy footsteps echoed up the service stairwell behind the nursery wall, followed by the unmistakable sound of a battering ram slamming against the reinforced steel back door.
