Chapter 14 - The Global Transmission

The shrill, rhythmic warning tone from the main security console cut through the quiet relief of the server room like a siren.

Judge Katherine spun around, her federal magistrate instincts kicking in instantly. She rushed out of the server room into the living room, her heels clacking sharply against the concrete floor, followed closely by Thomas, Maya, and David.

At the center console, the primary display screen was flashing a bright, pulsing crimson warning: “EXTERNAL DATA PACKET TRANSMISSION IN PROGRESS - 84% COMPLETE.”

"What is this?" Thomas demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous register as he slammed his hand onto the manual override button.

The button clicked uselessly. Nothing happened. The terminal remained locked.

"It's a dead-man's switch," a sharp voice spoke from the elevator foyer.

Everyone turned. Special Agent Vance—no relation, but the head of the federal cybersecurity detail assigned to the raid—was stepping back into the penthouse from the service corridor, his tablet displaying a frantic web of network diagnostics. "Jonathan Vance had a background process running on an encrypted timer. The moment his personal biometric credentials were revoked at the precinct downtown, his automated protocol triggered a delayed-action upload."

Maya stepped forward, adjusting her baby carrier instinctively. "Uploading what? Where is it going?"

"It's not just corporate files," Agent Vance replied, his fingers flying across his tablet screen in a desperate bid to trace the ping. "It's the decrypted routing ledgers of every offshore account Donald Sterling used to launder money for the international syndicates. Someone is broadcasting the identities of every single shadow investor, politician, and cartel boss tied to this corruption ring to a public-access decentralized network."

Thomas’s face drained of color. "If those names go public... the cartels won't just target the courts. They'll target everyone connected to this investigation." Including Maya and the baby.

"Can you block it?" David asked urgently, stepping up to the console and peering at the rapidly climbing percentage counter.

"Negative," Agent Vance said grimly. "The transmission is bouncing through fifteen different dark-web proxy servers across three continents. To stop it, we would have to pull the master power grid for the entire downtown financial district—which would crash the local hospital networks and shut down federal server banks."

The transmission counter ticked upward: 91%... 92%... 93%...

Maya stared at the glowing red numbers, a cold realization settling over her bones. Throughout this entire ordeal—from the cruel socialite in the hotel lobby to the corrupt manager, the predatory lawyer, and the hidden syndicates—she had believed the conflict was just about money, classism, and corporate greed. But sitting at the center of it all was a web of global violence that didn't care about legal technicalities, family legacies, or courtroom rulings.

"There's another way," Maya said quietly, her voice cutting through the panic in the room with absolute, unexpected clarity.

Every head turned to look at her. Thomas stared at his daughter, noting the fierce, unflinching resolve burning in her dark eyes—the exact same look her mother had worn twenty-two years ago when she signed away her empire to protect her family.

"Maya, what are you talking about?" Thomas asked, stepping toward her.

"The transmission isn't just an automated dump," Maya explained, pointing to a secondary line of code flickering on the console screen. "Look at the packet headers. It's an interactive stream. Whoever set the timer is waiting for a manual cryptographic confirmation key before they release the encryption keys to the public press."

Agent Vance’s eyes widened as he checked the code. "She's right. The raw files are useless without the decryption key. But the confirmation key can only be entered from a verified administrator terminal... right here."

The counter hit 99%—and then froze, hanging indefinitely on the final digit, awaiting the input of the master cryptographic signature.

Judge Katherine stepped up to the terminal, her hand hovering over the keyboard. "I have judicial administrative clearance. I can sign the block and lock the file permanently."

"No, Aunt Katherine," Maya said, stepping forward and gently placing her hand over the judge's wrist. "If you lock it, the syndicates will spend the rest of their lives hunting down everyone who touched this case to make sure those secrets never surface." She looked at her father, then down at her sleeping baby. "The only way to end this war is to drag the entire thing out into the open, once and for all."

May you like

Before anyone could stop her, Maya reached out and pressed the confirmation key on the console.
