Chapter 3 - The Cold Hand of Corporate Justice

The metallic click of stainless steel handcuffs sounded deafening in the high-ceilinged lobby of the Grand Sterling Hotel. Two private security operatives, working under direct orders from Thomas Vance’s legal division, pinned Arthur Vance against the reception desk. The pristine marble that had once symbolized Arthur’s petty authority now pressed flat against his cheek, distorting his expression into a mask of pure terror.

"You can't do this!" Arthur shrieked, spattering flecks of spit onto the mahogany wood. "I'm the general manager! I have rights! This is kidnapping—this is corporate overreach!"

"Corporate overreach?" Thomas Vance asked, his voice chillingly calm as he adjusted the cuffs of his crisp white shirt. He did not raise his voice; he didn't need to. In a room full of wealthy onlookers, every single person hung on his every syllable. "Mr. Vance, as the majority shareholder of Sterling Hospitality Group as of three minutes ago, I am exercising my prerogative to audit every single department in this building. Starting with the payroll fraud you've been running through dummy accounts for the past three years."

Arthur’s face turned an ugly shade of grayish-purple. The kicking and screaming stopped instantly, replaced by a wet, ragged gasp of air. "How... how could you possibly know about that?"

"I don't just buy companies on a whim," Thomas replied, stepping closer until his shadow completely swallowed the disgraced manager. "When my daughter was insulted in a property bearing my family's historic ties, my investigators didn't just pull your credit score. They pulled your tax returns. The police are already on their way up the service elevator. Enjoy your new accommodations."

Across the lobby, Beatrice Sterling was desperately tapping away on her own designer smartphone, her manicured fingers flying across the screen as she tried to reach her husband, Donald Sterling, the chairman of the hotel board. But every call went straight to voicemail. Unknown to her, Donald’s corporate phone had already been remotely locked by Thomas’s cyber-security team, freezing all his assets and cutting off his access to the family trust funds.

Maya stood a few paces back, still cradling her infant son, watching the dismantling of her tormentors with a quiet, hollow sort of vindication. The adrenaline crash was setting in, making her knees feel like water beneath her faded beige dress. She had spent the last two years living a deliberately quiet, independent life, refusing to lean on her billionaire father’s immense wealth after a bitter family fallout regarding her choice of partner. She had wanted to prove she could survive in the real world on her own terms, working a modest bookstore job and raising her baby in a modest apartment. Today’s harrowing experience had been a harsh reminder that the world outside her bubble was cruel, predatory, and unforgiving to those perceived as weak.

"Maya," Thomas said softly, turning away from the whimpering manager to address his daughter with a completely transformed demeanor. "Let's go home. You don't ever have to step foot in a place like this again."

"No, Dad," Maya said, her voice small but surprisingly firm, cutting through the murmurs of the horrified onlookers. "I'm not running away. And I'm not going back to your mansion to hide, either. I want to see this through. Every single part of it."

Thomas blinked, surprised by the sudden steel in his daughter's tone. Before he could respond, the revolving doors spun violently once more, admitting a squad of city police officers led by a grim-faced precinct captain who bypassed the crowd and walked straight toward Thomas, snapping off a crisp salute.

"Mr. Vance," the captain said, pulling a heavy file from under his arm. "We have the warrants for embezzlement and assault. But there's something else you need to see. We found a hidden ledger in the manager's office... and it involves Mrs. Sterling's husband laundering money through international shell corporations."
