Chapter 9: The Old Garage**

Two hours later, Elena sat on an old vinyl sofa inside the modest office of *Sterling Freight & Logistics* on the outskirts of the city.
She wore one of Arthur’s oversized flannel shirts and a pair of worn sweatpants, her wet wedding dress discarded in a trash bin by the door. In her hands, she held a steaming mug of black tea, watching her father clean a deep cut across his forehead in the small bathroom mirror.
The office was lined with old framed photographs: Arthur smiling with her mother on their wedding day, seven-year-old Elena sitting on the hood of a semi-truck, and dusty certificates of maritime logistics awards.
“Why didn't you tell me, Dad?” Elena asked quietly into the silence. “All those years when the bills were tight, why did you let me think we were barely surviving?”
Arthur walked out of the bathroom with a bandage taped over his brow. He sat down across from her at his battered wooden desk.
“Money doesn't build character, Ellie,” Arthur said softly. “When your mother died, I realized that all the billions in Vanguard couldn't buy one extra minute with her. I wanted you to grow up understanding the value of hard work and honest people, not shallow status.”

He paused, a look of sorrow in his eyes. “I thought I was protecting you. But by hiding it, I left you vulnerable to predators like Julian who use wealth as bait. That was my mistake.”
