Chapter 1: The Notification**

The ballroom went dead silent as Arthur turned his back, his worn brown cardigan trailing a faint scent of motor oil and cold rain.

Elena stood frozen under the glow of Swarovski chandeliers, her manicured finger still half-extended in mid-air. Julian, her fiancé, let out a dry, condescending laugh beside her. “Good riddance,” Julian scoffed, straightening his silk bowtie. “Security shouldn't have let a stray dog past the valet in the first place.”

Elena didn’t hear him. Her father’s parting whisper echoed in her ears like a death knell: *“Check your messages before I go.”*

Her heart thumping against her corseted ribs, Elena lifted the hem of her $40,000 custom lace gown and reached for the silver clutch sitting on the bridal table. Her hands trembled violently as she unlocked her phone.

A notification sat at the top of her screen from an unlisted number—sent five minutes before Arthur stepped through the ornate double doors. Attached was an official court transcript and a high-resolution photograph taken in a dimly lit garage late last night.

The photograph showed Julian standing beside two men Elena had never seen, sliding an envelope of thick cash across a hood. Underneath it was a voice memo.

With trembling fingers, Elena pressed the speaker against her ear.

Julian’s distinct, smooth voice whispered through the receiver: *“Make sure the brake lines on the old man's delivery truck are cut clean. If he survives the highway, he won’t have the money to stop the buyout. Once I marry Elena, her family estate is collateral for my shell firm anyway.”*

Elena’s knees buckled. She dropped the phone onto the marble floor. The screen cracked, but the truth remained entirely intact.
