Chapter 13: An Unexpected Meeting**

A year later, Elena was inspecting a newly renovated community center funded by Vanguard near the docks. The center provided free vocational training, childcare, and healthcare clinics for port families.
As she walked through the courtyard, she noticed a young architect kneeling on the grass, carefully measuring the foundation for a children's library wing. He wore dusty jeans, a faded navy sweater with frayed cuffs, and work boots covered in dried mortar.
When he stood up, he took off his protective goggles, revealing warm hazel eyes and a friendly smile.
“You must be Elena Sterling,” he said, extending a hand that was dusted with chalk. “I’m David. I’m the lead structural designer for the non-profit build.”
Elena took his hand without hesitation. “It’s a pleasure, David. Thank you for taking on this project on such short notice.”
“My grandfather was a crane operator here for forty years,” David said simply, looking out toward the cranes in the distance. “Working on this means more to me than any skyscraper downtown.”

Elena looked at him—unpretentious, honest, and grounded. For the first time in years, she felt a genuine, unforced warmth in her chest.
