Chapter 3: The Gathering Storm

Word of the lost heir’s return moved through the criminal underground with the speed of a desert wildfire. By dawn, the Iron Claw was surrounded by heavy motorcycles idling in the gravel parking lot, their deep exhausts rumbling like distant thunder. Inside, the lieutenants of the Black Vultures had arrived from neighboring states, summoned by Thomas under the guise of an emergency chapter meeting. They filled the smoke-stained room, their bearded faces tense, whispering among themselves about the rumor that Arthur Vance’s bloodline had returned from the ashes.

Lily sat at the center of the large circular table, completely dwarfed by the heavy leather-clad men surrounding her, yet commanding the entire space. She wore a fresh dark shirt, her long dark hair brushed and tied back neatly. Thomas stood directly behind her right shoulder, his massive arms crossed over his chest, his scarred head held high to project absolute protection over the child. When the heavy doors clicked shut, locking the room from the inside, the murmurs died instantly. Every man in the room knew about the wolf ring, and none dared look the girl directly in the eye.

"You all know why you're here," Thomas announced, his voice booming with forced authority, though a bead of sweat tracked down his scarred temple. He gestured toward Lily without touching her. "The girl has the signet. She has Arthur’s words, and she has his mandate. We thought we were orphans of a fallen king, but the king's blood is sitting right here." A burly lieutenant named Marcus, sporting a thick red beard and a neck tattoo of a coiled viper, scoffed loudly, shifting his weight and resting a heavy hand on his belt knife.

"Signets can be stolen, Thomas," Marcus challenged, his voice dripping with cynical arrogance as he leaned forward. "A piece of silver doesn't make a nine-year-old kid a commander of this charter. We run guns, contraband, and territory across three states. We don't take orders from a playground." The tension in the room snapped taut. Several bikers near Marcus tensed, their hands dropping toward hidden iron. Thomas lunged forward, but Lily raised a single small hand, freezing them all in place. She didn't blink as she turned her head to look directly at the dissenting lieutenant.

"My father spoke of you, Marcus," Lily said, her voice eerily calm in the heavy silence. "He said you were the one who managed the logistics for the Portland warehouse fire. He said you were the only one who knew the security override codes were changed twenty minutes before the explosion." Marcus’s face drained of color, his defiant smirk vanishing in an instant. The silence that followed was suffocating. Lily did not raise her voice, nor did she show anger. She simply stared at him with the cold, calculating gaze of an executioner waiting for the trapdoor to drop.
