Chapter 10: The Harbor Gates

The battered black pickup truck rolled quietly past the rusted security gates of Pier 42, blending seamlessly with the heavy commercial traffic of the Seattle port authority. Thick fog rolled in off Puget Sound, blanketing the towering shipping containers and labyrinthine loading bays in an eerie, obscuring gray veil. Thomas parked the truck behind a stack of weathered cargo crates, cutting the engine and extinguishing the headlights. The harbor was vast, echoing with the distant sound of creaking metal cables, crashing waves, and the low hum of distant container cranes.
"This is it," Thomas whispered, grabbing the shotgun from between the seats and chambering a shell with a sharp, metallic clack. He turned to Lily, his scarred face etched with deep concern. "Victor’s private security detail patrols these docks around the clock. Once we step out of this truck, there’s no turning back." Lily nodded calmly. She unbuckled her seatbelt, grabbed her olive-green jacket, and stepped out onto the damp concrete. The cold sea air whipped her long dark hair across her pale face, but she stood tall, her posture radiating absolute authority.
They moved methodically through the maze of stacked containers, utilizing the heavy shadows to bypass the automated security cameras and patrol routes. Lily’s memory was photographic; her father had walked these exact docks with her years ago, explaining every blind spot, every underground utility tunnel, and every weakness in the syndicate's infrastructure. She led Thomas through a narrow maintenance corridor hidden behind a row of refrigerated shipping units, their boots moving silently across the wet pavement. Up ahead, a heavy steel access door marked the private subterranean entrance to Victor Vance’s personal penthouse elevator.
Two armed guards in black tactical gear stood outside the heavy steel door, smoking cigarettes and casually chatting about sports, their assault rifles slung lazily over their shoulders. Thomas tensed, his massive muscles coiling like steel springs, preparing to rush them. But Lily raised a small hand, signaling him to halt. She stepped out from the shadows into the faint glow of the overhead halogen light, walking toward the guards with complete, unbothered composure. The guards stopped talking instantly, turning their attention toward the nine-year-old child standing alone in the fog.

"Hey, kid, you're trespassing in a restricted zone," the taller guard barked, stepping forward with a frown. "Get lost before—" He didn't finish the sentence. Before he could raise his weapon, Thomas lunged from the darkness with terrifying speed, slamming the guard’s head hard against the steel container wall with a dull thud. The second guard reached for his rifle, but Lily moved with chilling precision, sweeping her foot out to strike his knee joint while simultaneously driving the heel of her hand upward into his chest. The guard stumbled backward, gasping for air, before Thomas caught him by the vest and knocked him unconscious with a swift blow to the jaw.
