Chapter 9: The Thaw in the Hollow

By late March, the spring thaw had arrived in the Endless Mountains.

The thick snow on the hemlock boughs melted into thousands of shimmering diamonds, dripping into the swelling waters of Pine Creek. The smell of rich, dark forest loam and blooming mountain laurel filled the warming air.

Lily’s pregnancy had reached its thirty-eighth week.

She spent her afternoons sitting on the wide front porch of the farmhouse, resting in a comfortable wooden rocker Caleb had built for her, sketching the green shoots of wild ferns pushing through the damp earth.

Dr. Elena Ramirez drove up from Philadelphia every Friday to conduct home prenatal checkups in the farmhouse parlor.

""Her head is fully engaged, Lily,"" Dr. Ramirez smiled warmly, listening to the rapid, strong heartbeat through her acoustic stethoscope. ""The baseline heart rate is one hundred and forty beats per minute. Perfectly stable. She’s getting ready to meet the world.""

Sarah walked in, carrying a tray of fresh chamomile tea and warm blackberry scones.

""How is the nursery looking, Dr. Ramirez?"" Sarah asked with a radiant smile.

""It looks like heaven, Sarah,"" Dr. Ramirez replied, looking around the sunlit room filled with hand-carved cedar furniture, soft flannel blankets, and jars of fresh spring wildflowers. ""This baby is coming into a house of lions.""

Lily laughed, feeling a sudden, deep contraction tighten across her belly—a gentle, rhythmic wave that signaled the beginning of the final journey.

She looked at her mother, her eyes shining with quiet, unshakeable readiness.

""Mom,"" Lily whispered, placing her cup down. ""It's time.""
