Chapter 1: The Cold Glow of the Monitor

The rhythmic, aqueous whoosh of the fetal Doppler echoed inside Room 304 of St. Jude Memorial Hospital, sounding like galloping horses through deep water.

On the examination table, nineteen-year-old Lily clutched the thin cotton edges of her light blue hospital gown. Her knuckles were bloodless, her face pale and streaked with tears that had dried into tight, salt-crusted tracks. Her messy blonde bun was unraveling against the paper-covered pillow.

Beside the bed, kneeling on the cold vinyl tile, was her mother, Sarah. Sarah’s beige cardigan was crumpled, but her hands—warm, calloused, and unwavering—were wrapped firmly around Lily’s trembling fingers.

In the doorway of the ultrasound suite, the fluorescent lighting hummed with an unnatural, sterile buzz.

Flanked by two armed county sheriff deputies stood Dr. Alan Sterling. He wore seafoam-green scrubs beneath a crisp white lab coat, an electronic hospital ID badge pinned over his heart. His arms were folded tightly across his chest, his jaw set in a rigid, calculating mask. Through the observation window behind him, three senior resident nurses and the hospital’s chief legal administrator stood frozen, watching the culmination of an eight-month nightmare.

""Let's go meet your baby first,"" Sarah whispered softly, leaning in to press a tender, lingering kiss onto Lily’s clammy forehead.

Lily’s eyes, wide and luminous with lingering terror, darted toward the doorway.

Sarah placed her right palm flat over Lily’s rounded abdomen, feeling the strong, unmistakable kick of life within. She slowly turned her head, casting a cold, defiant gaze over her shoulder directly into the eyes of the man in the white coat.

""He won't touch you again,"" Sarah said with quiet, unbreakable finality.

Deputy Miller stepped forward, placing a heavy, gloved hand on Sterling’s shoulder.

""Dr. Sterling,"" Deputy Miller said, his voice echoing off the clinical walls. ""You need to step into the corridor. The District Attorney’s warrant for medical malpractice, coerced clinical trials, and obstruction of justice has been served.""

Sterling didn't move for three long seconds. His eyes flickered toward the ultrasound monitor where the black-and-white sonogram traced the delicate outline of an infant skull.

""This hospital belongs to my board, Sarah,"" Sterling murmured in a low, poisonous register. ""You won't make it to trial.""

May you like

""You don't own the truth, Alan,"" Sarah answered, her voice dropping into a register of unshakable maternal authority. ""Now get out of my daughter’s room.""
