Chapter 3: The Sanctuary in the Pines

They left the hospital at dusk in an unmarked state vehicle, avoiding the media vans gathered outside the main emergency entrance.

Sarah drove three hours north along the winding mountain highways of Pennsylvania, heading deep into the endless hemlock forests of the Endless Mountains.

There, nestled beside a rushing glacial creek at the end of a long gravel road, sat a two-story timber farmhouse built of rough-hewn white pine and river stone. It was the home where Sarah had been raised—a place where the air tasted of balsam fir, woodsmoke, and cold mountain spring water.

Sarah’s brother, Caleb—a thirty-eight-year-old timber carpenter and former combat medic—stood on the wide front porch, holding an old kerosene lantern to light their way up the stone steps.

""The hearth is stoked, Sarah,"" Caleb said gently, taking their overnight bags. ""The soup has been simmering on the woodstove since noon.""

Inside, the house was alive with warmth. The stone fireplace crackled with seasoned oak, throwing dancing amber shadows across the wide-plank pine floors. A hand-carved cedar cradle, built by Caleb using antique mortise-and-tenon joinery, stood in the corner of the living room, lined with soft flannel quilts hand-stitched by Lily’s grandmother.

Lily walked over to the cradle, running her fingertips across the smooth, polished wood.

""It smells like cedar,"" Lily said, her voice barely a whisper.

""Cedar keeps away the rot, Lily,"" Caleb said with a warm, grounding smile. ""Nothing enters this valley that isn't honest.""

For the first time in eight months, Lily sat in an armchair without looking over her shoulder. She closed her eyes, listening to the crackle of the fire and the distant, soothing roar of the mountain stream, feeling the dark shadows of the city clinic begin to loosen their grip on her heart.
