Chapter 4: The Archive of Silence

While Lily rested in the mountains, the legal machinery of the state began dismantling Dr. Alan Sterling’s empire of deceit.
In a secure basement deposition room in Philadelphia, Arthur Vance—the lead civil rights attorney representing the coalition of whistleblowers—spread sixty-four certified medical dossiers across a steel conference table.
Beside him sat Detective Marcus Hayes of the State Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
""He targeted vulnerable young women from rural community colleges,"" Detective Hayes explained, tapping a ledger stamped with confidential pharmaceutical audit seals. ""Sterling was receiving ten million dollars in offshore research grants from an unaccredited Swiss biotech firm to test synthetic placental barrier inhibitors. When Lily discovered the forged consent forms in his office where she worked as a student receptionist, he threatened to have her committed to a psychiatric facility and declare her unborn child a ward of the state.""
Arthur Vance ran his fingers across the signed affidavits of eight other former patients who had been intimidated into silence over the past decade.
""He used his white coat as a badge of absolute sovereignty,"" Arthur said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying baritone. ""He convinced these families that he was their savior while poisoning their bloodlines for corporate equity.""
The door opened, and the Assistant Attorney General walked in, holding a certified red-sealed folder.
""The federal judge just denied bail, gentlemen,"" the prosecutor announced. ""Sterling’s passport is revoked, his private clinic assets are frozen, and eighteen corporate board members have been subpoenaed for grand jury testimony on Monday morning.""
Arthur Vance leaned back in his chair, looking at the photograph of Lily and Sarah attached to the primary complaint.

""Let the subpoenas fly,"" Arthur said calmly. ""We are going to clean that hospital down to the bedrock.""
