Chapter 10: The Arrival of Grace

The labor lasted fourteen hours through the crisp, star-filled mountain night.

There were no harsh fluorescent lights. There were no armed guards, no cold clinical monitors, and no voices demanding signatures on legal waivers.

There was only the soft amber glow of kerosene lamps, the crackle of seasoned oak in the hearth, and the gentle, tireless voices of Sarah and Dr. Ramirez guiding every breath.

Caleb kept the woodstoves stoked throughout the night, carrying pails of fresh spring water heated over the iron range.

At 5:42 AM, as the first golden rays of the spring sun broke over the mountain ridge, painting the treetops in vibrant amber and rose, the quiet room was filled with a sharp, clear, triumphant cry.

""Look at her, Lily,"" Dr. Ramirez whispered, tears of joy streaming down her cheeks as she gently laid the newborn infant onto Lily’s bare chest.

The baby was radiant: six pounds, eight ounces of perfect, unblemished life, with a thick crown of soft dark hair and bright, luminous hazel eyes that blinked against the morning light.

Lily wrapped her trembling arms around her daughter, feeling the tiny, frantic heartbeat press against her own.

""Grace,"" Lily sobbed softly, kissing the baby’s damp forehead. ""Her name is Grace.""

Sarah knelt beside the bed, wrapping her arms around both of them, burying her face in Lily’s neck as tears of boundless, generational gratitude washed over her cheeks.
