Chapter 9

The precinct holding room smelled faintly of industrial disinfectant and stale coffee. Outside the frosted glass window, the late-night rain tapped a steady, soothing rhythm against the brickwork. Nia sat across the stainless-steel table from Detective Miller, her zip-up jacket zipped to her collar, her posture upright and completely at ease.

Detective Miller slid a thick folder across the table, tapping the cover with the eraser end of a wooden pencil. "We’ve mirrored the data from the USB drive Chloe threw on the floor. It matches the financial ledger you recovered from the storage room. Dozens of victims, thousands of dollars in illicit cash transactions, and covert recordings taken inside private wellness consultation rooms without consent."

"Will it hold up in court?" Nia asked, her voice steady and measured.

"Airtight," Miller replied, offering a respectful nod. "With council member Jenkins, David, and Maya willing to testify, plus Marcus turning over the internal network logs, the District Attorney’s office is preparing felony charges for grand larceny and extortion. She won't be seeing the inside of a fitness studio for a very long time."

Nia exhaled slowly, the residual tension from the confrontation finally draining from her shoulders. "Good. The people who come to Apex Motion deserve a space where they feel safe, not hunted."

Meanwhile, back at the studio, Marcus was holding an emergency virtual meeting with all remaining instructors and staff members. He didn't try to sweep the scandal under the rug or hide behind corporate doublespeak. He laid out the entire truth—the extortion, the hidden cameras, and his own blind trust in a toxic employee who had betrayed the foundational values of the business.

"Apex Motion was built on community, trust, and physical well-being," Marcus told the dozen instructors staring back through their laptop screens. "We lost our way by allowing toxicity to masquerade as excellence. Starting Monday morning, we wipe the slate clean. Nia will step into the lead balance and conditioning director role permanently, and we are implementing an independent compliance committee to ensure no client’s privacy is ever compromised again."

Maya, who was sitting in on the Zoom call from her living room, smiled softly and typed into the chat box: It’s about time.

The healing process for the studio wouldn't happen overnight, but the cancer that had hollowed out its core for over three years had finally been excised.
