Chapter 3

The afternoon lull settled over Apex Motion like a heavy wool blanket. The midday rush of corporate workers had emptied out, leaving the hardwood floors gleaming under the afternoon sun. Nia took advantage of the quiet to conduct a thorough inventory of the studio equipment room—a cramped, windowless space tucked behind the main barre where extra resistance bands, yoga blocks, and stability disks were stored in industrial metal shelving.
As she slid open the bottom drawer of the rolling supply cart, her hand brushed against a stack of thick, leather-bound notebooks tucked behind a box of latex-free resistance bands. Curious, Nia pulled the top notebook free. The cover was worn at the corners, embossed with a gold monogram that didn't belong to the studio branding: C.V.
Chloe Vance.
Nia flipped open the cover. Inside, page after densely written page detailed a meticulous, highly secretive financial ledger. It wasn't studio accounting. It was a private tracking system of client stipends, under-the-table cash kickbacks, and personal training fees funneled away from the Apex Motion central register. Next to the columns of numbers were handwritten notes detailing client vulnerabilities, private medical notes, and leverage points Chloe used to maintain absolute loyalty among her wealthy clientele. One entry caught Nia's eye: a note regarding Sarah Jenkins, a prominent local city council member who attended Chloe’s Tuesday sculpt class. The note read: Keep quiet about the DUI settlement; she’ll pay double for private reformer hours.
Nia’s stomach tightened. This went far beyond petty workplace rivalry or bruised professional ego. Chloe was running an extortion-adjacent private practice using Apex Motion's facilities, client lists, and equipment, all while skimming revenue right out from under Marcus’s nose.
The heavy metal door of the supply room creaked open. Nia instinctively slid the ledger back into the drawer and turned around to find Marcus standing in the doorway, holding a printed incident report.
"I pulled the security footage," Marcus said, his voice unusually quiet. He looked exhausted, the lines around his eyes deepening. "I saw the whole thing. Chloe threw the punch. You defended yourself cleanly. You have every right to file a formal complaint with HR, or even press charges."
Nia looked at Marcus, weighing the heavy secret resting inside the drawer behind her. Bringing out the ledger now would blow the studio wide open, potentially destroying the business Marcus had spent a decade building. But keeping silent meant letting a toxic predator continue to manipulate vulnerable clients under the guise of wellness coaching.

"Pressing charges isn't my style," Nia said carefully, stepping past Marcus into the light of the main studio. "Exposing the truth is much more effective."
