Chapter 2

The front reception area of Apex Motion was a monument to modern wellness aesthetics: minimalist quartz countertops, shelves lined with organic bamboo water bottles, and a towering monstera plant that caught the morning sun. Yet, the energy vibrating near the front desk felt anything but serene.
Marcus, the studio owner, stood behind the counter typing furiously on his tablet, his brow furrowed beneath thinning salt-and-pepper hair. He had cut his Chicago trip short by twenty-four hours after receiving a blistering three-page email from Chloe detailing an alleged assault, complete with hyperbolic accusations of professional negligence and hostile work environments.
"Nia, step here for a moment," Marcus called out as the studio doors swung open to admit the first wave of Friday morning regulars.
Nia walked out from the inner studio, her movements fluid and unhurried. She wore a light gray zip-up jacket over her green crop top, her braids gathered into a high ponytail. She met Marcus’s anxious gaze with calm transparency.
"I read Chloe’s report," Marcus whispered, leaning across the quartz counter so the arriving patrons wouldn't overhear. "She claims you initiated physical contact, that you deliberately provoked her in front of arriving members, and that your certification credentials are... questionable."
Nia didn't flinch. "Chloe confronted me before the 9 AM class about my right to teach balance mechanics. When I asked her to leave the instruction floor, she threw a closed-fist right hook at my jaw. I ducked, blocked, and redirected her momentum into the fitness equipment rack. There are three security cameras in that room, Marcus. You can pull the footage right now."
Marcus swallowed hard, tapping his screen to bring up the local server logs. The studio’s cloud-based surveillance system recorded every square inch of the workout floor in high-definition. He punched in his administrative password, his fingers hesitating over the enter key. Chloe was one of their highest-grossing trainers, bringing in affluent private clients who bought expensive wellness packages. Nia was talented, but she was new, an independent contractor hired on a temporary bridge contract.
"I need to review the footage before I make any decisions regarding Monday's schedule," Marcus said cautiously, avoiding direct eye contact.
"Review it," Nia replied evenly, her voice devoid of pleading or anger. "And while you’re at it, check the maintenance logs for the balance boards. You might find out why Chloe was so desperate to keep anyone else from inspecting my syllabus."

With that, Nia turned back toward the studio, leaving Marcus standing alone in the sunlit lobby with more questions than answers.
