Chapter 4

The sun dipped below the city skyline, casting long, bruised shadows across the pavement outside Apex Motion. Inside, the evening restorative yoga class was winding down. The lights had been dimmed to a warm amber glow, and soft ambient tones drifted from the corner speakers. Nia guided the remaining six students through a slow, restorative child's pose, her voice a gentle anchor in the quiet room.

When the class concluded and the last student had rolled up their mat and stepped out into the night, Nia began wiping down the ballet barre with an antiseptic cloth. The rhythmic squeak of the cloth against the varnished wood was interrupted by the soft chime of the front door opening.

It wasn't a client. It was Sarah Jenkins, the city council member whose name Nia had seen in Chloe’s secret ledger earlier that day. Sarah looked distressed, her tailored wool coat clutched tightly around her neck, her eyes darting nervously toward the empty studio floor.

"Is the office closed?" Sarah asked, her voice tight and hurried.

"Class just finished, but I can help you if you need something," Nia said, setting the cloth down and walking toward the lobby area.

Sarah stepped inside, letting the glass door click shut behind her. She approached the front desk, glancing over her shoulder before speaking in a low, breathless whisper. "You’re Nia, right? The new instructor? Chloe... Chloe told me she’d be teaching tonight. She said she needed to discuss my upcoming renewal contract in person."

Nia observed the council member’s trembling hands and pale complexion. It was clear Sarah wasn't here for a wellness consultation. "Chloe isn't here tonight, Councilwoman Jenkins. In fact, Chloe hasn't been permitted on the teaching floor since this morning."

Sarah’s breath hitched. A look of sheer panic washed over her face. "She's not here? Oh god. If she’s not here, she’s going to release those files. She’s going to ruin me."

"What files, Sarah?" Nia asked gently, closing the distance between them without threatening her personal space.

"Everything," Sarah whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "My private medical history from three years ago, the details of my traffic settlement... Chloe has been blackmailing me for months. Every time I tried to scale back my private sessions with her, she threatened to send the packet to the local paper. She said she controlled this studio, that Marcus trusted her implicitly, and that anyone who crossed her would find themselves blacklisted from every wellness space in the city."

Nia listened without interrupting, her jaw tightening as the full scope of Chloe’s predatory network came into focus. The private ledger in the back supply room wasn't just a side hustle; it was an anchor holding multiple innocent people in a state of psychological captivity.

"You don't have to be afraid of her anymore," Nia said firmly, placing a steady hand on the counter. "I found her ledger this afternoon. We have proof of what she’s been doing."
