Chapter 7

The clock on the studio wall ticked past 7:45 PM. The overhead lights in the main reception area had been dimmed to a soft amber glow, casting long, dramatic shadows across the polished maple floors and the silent ballet barre mounted against the back wall. Outside, a light drizzle began to tap against the large glass windows, blurring the streetlights into hazy smears of yellow and white.

Inside the mechanical storage room behind the front desk, Marcus and two plainclothes police detectives—Detective Miller and Officer Vance—watched the multi-angle security feeds on a small laptop screen. The video clarity was pristine, capturing every inch of the hallway leading from the main entrance to the rear fitness equipment lockers.

David sat on a rubber fitness mat near the entrance, holding a plain white envelope filled with cut paper designed to mimic the stack of cash Chloe had demanded. His breathing was shallow, his knuckles white as he clutched the envelope in his lap.

"Relax, David," Nia murmured, standing quietly near the doorway of the storage room, her arms crossed lightly over her green crop top. "Just stick to the script. Let her talk."

At exactly 7:58 PM, the front door chime rang softly.

The security monitor flickered. Chloe stepped into the frame. She had bypassed her usual workout gear, wearing a heavy black trench coat over dark denim jeans, her blonde hair pulled back into a tight, aggressive knot. Her eyes scanned the empty lobby with sharp, suspicious intensity before she spotted David sitting quietly by the mat rack.

"You're alone?" Chloe asked, her voice echoing slightly off the high ceilings as she walked down the hallway.

"The studio closed twenty minutes ago," David said, standing up slowly and holding the envelope at waist height. "I have the money. Just give me the hard drive with the recordings, Chloe. We’re done."

Chloe stopped three feet away from him, a cold, triumphant smirk curling the corners of her mouth. She didn't bother lowering her voice. "You should have paid on time, David. People who think they can outsmart my studio schedule always learn the hard way." She reached into her trench coat pocket, pulling out a small black USB flash drive and dangling it mockingly between her fingers. "Here’s your life back. Hand over the envelope."

Inside the mechanical room, Detective Miller pressed the record button on his encrypted console, logging the explicit extortion demand in real-time.

"Not so fast, Chloe," a firm voice echoed down the hallway.

Marcus stepped out from the shadows of the reception desk, his face pale but completely resolute. Behind him, Detective Miller and Officer Vance stepped into the light, their badges displayed clearly on their jackets.
