Chapter 7

Sliding down the narrow, vertical brick flue felt like falling through an endless chimney of nightmares. Lily used her elbows and knees to control her velocity, though the rough, protruding mortar scraped painfully against her bare arms through the torn fabric of her light blue dress. The air grew steadily colder and damper, smelling strongly of wet stone, earth, and old iron. Every few feet, small piles of soot and crumbling mortar gave way beneath her weight, showering down into the black abyss below with soft, hollow echoes.

Suddenly, her right heel struck solid ground with a jarring thud that sent a sharp pain shooting up her shin. She tumbled forward onto her hands and knees, gasping for breath in the damp, enclosed darkness of the lower cellar. The air here was heavy and still, untouched by the direct heat of the fire above, but thick with an oppressive humidity that made it difficult to draw a full breath. Coughing quietly into her elbow, Lily slowly pushed herself up to a standing position, her fingers brushing against the cold, damp stone walls of the subterranean chamber.

She was standing in the estate’s forgotten foundation cellar—a sprawling, subterranean labyrinth used decades ago to store winter provisions and coal before the house was modernized. In the absolute darkness, she could barely make out the faint outlines of wooden storage crates and rusted iron shelving units lining the perimeter. Faintly, from somewhere far above through the thick stone ceiling, she could hear the muffled, rhythmic thud of heavy boots and the distant sound of shouting voices.

Lily froze, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The voices belonged to firefighters, but she also recognized the low, clipped cadence of Marcus speaking near the main entrance overhead. She knew instinctively that if she shouted for help now, anyone who found her might lead her straight back to Elena. The memory of her mother’s cold, unfeeling expression through the burning glass door flashed vividly in her mind, locking her jaw in stubborn silence. She had to find another way out of the cellar before anyone descended the stairs to inspect the lower levels.
