Chapter 14

The sun began to crest the horizon, painting the snow-covered pine trees and the charred skeleton of the west wing in a pale, amber morning light. The fire trucks had finally extinguished the last lingering embers, leaving behind a faint plume of gray smoke that drifted lazily up into the cold winter sky. Standing wrapped in a thick, warm wool blanket provided by a paramedic, Lily watched quietly as Elena—her hands cuffed behind her back—was escorted down the steps and placed securely into the back of a waiting transport vehicle. Elena did not look back. Her face was locked in a bitter, unbroken stare directed straight ahead, utterly defeated by the weight of her own crimes.
Marcus had already been transferred to a separate cruiser, his attempts at legal justification silenced by the overwhelming evidence contained within the leather ledger now resting securely in the hands of the lead detective. The financial corruption, the engineered fire, and the deliberate abandonment of a child were all laid out in undeniable detail, ensuring that neither adult would ever manipulate the system again.
A kind, middle-aged female detective knelt gently beside Lily on the gravel driveway, offering a reassuring, genuine smile that reached her eyes. “You did an incredibly brave thing last night, Lily. Your father would be very proud of you.”
Lily looked down at the blanket wrapped tightly around her shoulders, feeling the deep, persistent fatigue finally catch up to her small frame. Yet, for the first time in weeks, the heavy weight pressing down on her chest was gone. The cold, unfeeling glass door, the suffocating smoke, and the terrifying isolation beneath the bed frame were now part of a nightmare left firmly in the past.

“Can I see my dad now?” Lily asked quietly, her voice small but steady.
The detective nodded gently, placing a warm hand over Lily’s shoulder. “Arrangements are already being made, sweet-heart. He’s on his way back home, and you’re going to be safe from now on.”
