Chapter 5

The smoke had thickened to a dense, yellowish haze that drifted low along the bedroom floor, forcing Lily to press her face directly against the cool floorboards to find breathable air. The roar of the fire was deafening now, a steady, ravenous monster devouring the furniture, the curtains, and the wooden toys stacked neatly in the corner. Through the haze, Lily noticed something peculiar near the baseboard behind the white bed. The old wooden floor vent, usually screwed tightly shut to prevent drafts, had been warped and partially dislodged by the intense heat radiating from the brick chimney behind the wall.
With trembling fingers, Lily reached out and shoved against the loose metal grate. It gave way with a sharp, metallic screech, tumbling inward into the dark, narrow vertical shaft beyond. A rush of cooler, albeit damp, air billowed up from the opening, offering immediate relief to her burning lungs. Peering downward into the pitch-black void, she could hear the faint sound of dripping water echoing far below. It was an old chimney flue, unused for generations, descending straight down into the forgotten stone cellars beneath the foundation of the house.

Lily hesitated. The drop was dark, uninviting, and completely unknown. She looked back toward the glass door, where the flames now completely obscured the hallway beyond, turning the glass into a glowing wall of fire. There was no going back into the room, and staying beneath the bed meant certain death as the ceiling joists began to crack and groan under the escalating heat. Taking a deep, ragged breath of the cooler air rising from the vent, she wriggled her shoulders backward, sliding her legs into the dark rectangular opening feet first.
As she slipped into the vertical shaft, her light blue dress caught briefly on a jagged splinter of old wood, tearing the fabric down the seam. She untangled herself with a frantic tug and began to slide downward, using her palms and knees to brake against the rough, soot-covered brick walls. The descent was steep and unforgiving, scraping her skin and filling her hair with decades of accumulated soot, but every foot she dropped carried her further away from the deadly inferno raging in the bedroom above.
