Chapter 15

Three months later, the spring thaw finally brought vibrant green life back to the sprawling estate grounds, washing away the lingering traces of soot and ash that had stained the property during that fateful winter night. The west wing of the mansion had been completely restored, its new timber and sparkling windows standing as a testament to renewal rather than destruction. Inside the newly renovated nursery, the walls were painted a soft, soothing shade of lavender, completely erasing the memory of the fire that had once threatened to consume everything in its path.

Lily sat cross-legged on a bright yellow rug in the center of the room, carefully painting a picture of a tall oak tree bathed in golden sunlight. The door to the hallway stood wide open, held firmly in place by a heavy brass stop, allowing the warm, gentle breeze of a spring afternoon to drift freely through the space. There were no thermal seals, no locks, and no barriers of any kind remaining in the house.

Footsteps approached softly down the hallway, and a familiar, warm shadow fell across the doorway. Her father stood there, smiling genuinely with eyes that radiated deep, unwavering affection. He walked into the room, knelt beside her on the rug, and handed her a fresh tube of blue paint without a word, matching her quiet, steady rhythm.

Lily looked up from her canvas, meeting her father’s gaze with a small, contented smile that reached her eyes for the first time in years. The shadows of the past had finally receded into the background, replaced by the enduring warmth of a family reunited and a future built on truth, safety, and unbreakable love. She dipped her brush gently into the bright blue paint, adding a clear, vibrant sky to her canvas, and turned back to her work with a peaceful heart, knowing the dark winter was finally and truly over.
