Chapter 13

Inside the foyer of the mansion, sheltered from the biting winter wind and the glare of the flashing cruiser lights, Elena stood watching the confrontation unfold through the leaded glass sidelights of the front door. She saw the police officer accept the heavy leather ledger from Lily’s hands. She saw Marcus freeze in place under the sharp beam of the officer’s flashlight. The immaculate, untouchable empire she had spent a decade constructing collapsed into dust in a matter of seconds. Her expression of fragile, grieving motherhood dissolved instantly, replaced by a cold, venomous fury as she realized her own precautions had been undone by a child’s survival instinct and an old chimney flue.

Without hesitation, Elena turned away from the front door and strode quickly toward the back service exit near the kitchen, hoping to slip unnoticed toward the dense line of pine trees bordering the property line. She reached the heavy oak door and threw it open, stepping out into the cold night air—only to find two state troopers blocking the path, their flashlights illuminating her face in a blinding white glare.

“Mrs. Vance,” the lead trooper stated flatly, his hand resting firmly on his holster as he stepped forward to block her retreat. “You need to remain inside the designated safe zone while the investigation is underway. Step back, please.”

Elena stared at the troopers, her chest heaving with shallow, angry breaths. The composure that had defined her every movement all evening finally shattered entirely. “You have no idea what you’re interfering with,” she hissed, her voice sharp and venomous. “That house is my life, my work, everything I built! That child is nothing more than a liability who refused to understand the cost of survival!”

The troopers exchanged a quick, knowing glance. The confession hung clearly in the cold winter air, recorded effortlessly by the body cameras clipped to their jackets. Without another word, one trooper stepped forward, gently but firmly grasping Elena’s wrists and securing a pair of cold steel handcuffs around them with a sharp click. Elena offered no physical resistance, but her eyes burned with a fierce, unbroken malice as she was led slowly back toward the front entrance where Lily stood safely beside the police cruiser.
