Chapter 1

The heat radiating against the heavy glass door was an oppressive, suffocating weight. Inside the small, smoke-hazy bedroom, seven-year-old Lily pressed her small, trembling palms flat against the cold pane. Tears carved clean tracks through the soot darkening her cheeks. Her light blue summer dress, stained with gray ash, clung damply to her skin as she breathed in shallow, panicked gasps. The orange glow of the creeping flames danced wildly across the bedroom wallpaper behind her, licking hungrily at the bookshelf and casting erratic shadows against the ceiling. Outside in the safer, smoke-free corridor stood Elena, her blonde hair pulled back neatly, her features locked in a mask of chilling, unnatural composure. Elena’s eyes remained steady, devoid of maternal panic, observing the trapped child through the transparent barrier with a terrifying detachment.
“Mommy, please open the door!” Lily sobbed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched plea that vibrated faintly against the thick safety glass.
Elena did not flinch. She did not reach for the heavy brass handle or make a single reassuring gesture. Instead, she turned her head slightly toward an unseen figure standing just beyond the edge of the hallway frame, her voice dropping into a flat, monotone register that carried easily through the acoustic glass.

“She won’t stop screaming. Leave her,” Elena stated coldly, dismissing the terror unfolding inches away.
Inside the room, the oxygen felt increasingly thin, smelling sharply of melted plastic and burning timber. Lily looked up, her blue eyes wide, drenched in absolute despair as she realized the horrifying truth of her mother’s abandonment. The realization struck her harder than the heat. She turned away from the barrier, her bare feet crunching against scattered shards of a broken bedside lamp. She bolted across the littered floor toward her white wooden bed, seeking any semblance of safety. Diving headfirst into the shadowed dust beneath the frame, she pressed herself tightly against a pair of muddy outdoor boots left tucked in the corner. From the gloom, she stared directly out into the room, her chest heaving, trapped in a nightmare engineered by the very person who brought her into the world.
