Chapter 9 - The Extraction Point

"Drop your weapons and place your hands behind your head!" the lead operative shouted through a voice amplifier, the mechanical screech echoing off the high tin ceiling.

Julian instinctively raised his hands, the black backpack slipping off his shoulder and hitting the concrete with a dull thud. Beside him, Arthur didn't flinch. The old man stood completely still, his cloudy blue eyes fixed calmly on the advancing tactical team as if watching actors on a stage.

"Don't shoot the boy," a cold, modulated voice commanded from the shadows behind the tactical squad. "His genetic integrity is compromised if he takes even a single fragment of shrapnel."

The operatives parted ranks, stepping aside to allow a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit to walk forward into the pale light of the skylight. He wore wire-rimmed glasses, and his dark hair was neatly combed, showing only a touch of grey at the temples. As he stepped closer, Julian’s breath caught in his throat. The face, the posture, the precise way he angled his chin—it was an older, sharper, colder version of Julian's own reflection in the mirror.

"Hello, Julian," his father said softly, a ghost of a smile touching his lips. "You’ve grown into quite a fine young man. Just the right age for the harvest."

Julian stared at the man he had mourned for fifteen years, the man whose framed photograph had sat on his mother’s nightstand until the day she died. There was no warmth in his father's eyes, only the sterile, calculating gaze of a scientist inspecting a lab specimen under a microscope.

"You're dead," Julian choked out, his voice shaking with a mix of fury and profound grief. "Mother said you died in the fire. She cried for you every single day."

"Your mother was a loyal employee," his father replied smoothly, gesturing to the operatives to lower their weapons slightly. "She understood that sacrifice was necessary for the greater design. Just as you will understand, once the neural bridge is fully calibrated."

Arthur suddenly lunged forward with blinding speed, pulling a heavy steel wrench from beneath his brown jacket and smashing it directly into the control panel of a nearby wall generator.

A blinding arc of blue electricity surged through the overhead lighting grid, plunging the entire warehouse into total darkness as emergency sirens shrieked to life overhead.
