Chapter 5 - Into the Maintenance Tunnels

The darkness of the maintenance tunnel was absolute, broken only by the faint, rhythmic pulse of distant emergency lights far down the line. Julian ran blindly, the heavy black backpack bouncing violently against his spine, the manila envelope rustling inside with every stride. The smell of damp earth, stagnant water, and old rust filled his lungs, burning with a metallic tang that made him cough. Behind him, the muffled shout of the grey-suited operative echoed off the curved concrete walls, followed by the heavy, rapid thud of tactical boots closing the gap.

"You can't outrun us, Vance!" the voice ricocheted through the narrow space, sounding distorted and monstrous in the echo chamber.

Julian rounded a sharp ninety-degree turn, his sneaker slipping on a patch of slick moss. He slammed his shoulder hard against the rough brick wall, his breath escaping in a sharp gasp, but forced himself to keep moving. His father had survived a fire, according to the operative. That single revelation hammered against Julian's skull with relentless force. If his father was still alive, why hadn't he come home? Why let a grieving wife and a terrified child mourn an empty casket for fifteen years?

Up ahead, a faint shaft of natural daylight cut vertically down through a rusted sidewalk grate overhead. Julian pushed toward it, his legs burning with exhaustion. As he reached the grate, he caught a glimpse of pedestrian feet walking past above—ordinary people living ordinary lives, completely oblivious to the subterranean hunt unfolding beneath their feet.

Suddenly, a heavy iron ladder came into view, leading up to a locked maintenance hatch embedded in the sidewalk above. Without hesitating, Julian grabbed the rusted rungs and hauled his weight upward, his arms trembling from fatigue.

As his head cleared the hatch level, pushing the heavy iron lid upward just enough to peer out, a weathered hand reached down from the shadows of a nearby alleyway and grabbed him firmly by the collar of his dark blue hoodie, yanking him violently sideways out of the shaft just as a suppressed gunshot pinged off the metal edge of the hatch.
