Chapter 8 - The Machine's Secret

The heavy silence inside the abandoned textile warehouse hung like a physical weight. Julian stared at Arthur, the words echoing through his mind with terrifying clarity.

"Running it?" Julian repeated, his voice cracking. "You just said they hunted him! You said he faked his death to escape them!"

"People change allegiances when survival becomes the only currency left," Arthur replied, stepping away from the industrial machine and walking toward a rusted metal desk covered in decades of grime. He picked up an old, disconnected rotary phone, tracing the coiled cord with a weathered finger. "Your father didn't run away from the syndicate because he opposed their methods. He ran away because he realized they weren't ruthless enough to secure the timeline."

Julian stood up slowly, clutching the black backpack. "What does that even mean? What timeline?"

"The biological clock," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The serum we developed didn't just stop cellular decay, Julian. It altered cognitive processing. It makes the host immune to fear, remorse, and human empathy. Your father isn't a prisoner in that facility. He is the architect of a controlled global collapse, and you were brought here today not by coincidence, but because he needs a fresh genetic match to sustain his own failing neural link."

Julian froze, the blood draining from his face as a wave of absolute horror washed over him. He looked down at his own hands, remembering the dark blue hoodie he wore, the exact physical measurements of his frame, matching his father's profile down to the bone structure.

"A donor," Julian whispered, the horrifying realization clicking into place. "I wasn't protected. I was farmed."

Through the smoke, three armed operatives in black tactical gear marched into the warehouse, their laser sights painting the concrete walls in brilliant crimson.
